I am currently teaching weaving at my high school placement.  I find that weaving has a real calming effect on students.  Once they learn the basic weaving techniques students easily create well crafted weavings.  One thing that really helped both my students and myself was creating a sample weaving.  Doing samples can be a bit boring, but they really do pay off in the long run.  Samples are low stakes.  Students are free to experiment and it’s not the end of the world if they mess up.  Using only neutral colours also helps students focus more on learning a technique and good craftsmanship rather then getting bogged down with material, colour, and design choices.  After students complete their samples they felt very prepared to tackle their final colourful, weft faced final weavings.
