In response to student feedback requesting greater transparency in decision-making, the Division of Student Affairs (DSA) established the Student Leadership Executive Board (SLEB) in spring 2024. In its second year, this vital group serves as the primary conduit for dialogue between VCU students and university administrators, particularly the Vice President for Student Affairs, amplifying student voices across the university and within Virginia’s leadership.

Jo Adams, President of the VCU Student Government Association and an SLEB member, highlighted the efficacy of their round table discussions with Dr. Aaron Hart, Vice President for Student Affairs. Adams stated, “Discussing ideas and concerns with Dr. Hart allowed us to truly workshop student issues and find real solutions to help everyone on campus.” She also noted Dr. Hart’s supportive approach: “Dr. Hart is very helpful, he has always checked in with each of us and helps us recognize that we are still human at the end of the day.”

Beyond these crucial discussions, SLEB has actively worked on a Student Communication and Awareness Plan. Leveraging their unique perspectives as student leaders, the group has collaboratively developed strategies to improve how information is shared with and understood by the wider student body.

Looking ahead, SLEB is poised to make a significant impact on campus. The board has rapidly become an established voice and a valuable resource, with even external business entities reaching out for guidance on how to become more student-friendly. Ultimately, SLEB’s core message to VCU students is simple: they are here to listen and advocate on their behalf.

The board comprises key representatives from various student organizations, ensuring a broad spectrum of student perspectives:

  • President, Student Government Association
  • President, Graduate and Professional Student Senate
  • President, Residence Hall Association
  • President, Graduate Student Association
  • President of the Student Athlete Advisory Council (Added Fall 2025)*
  • Two VCU Board of Visitors Representatives
  • Two State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) Representatives
  • Vice President for Student Affairs
  • Associate Vice President for Transformative Student Experiences (Meeting Coordinator)
  • Associate Vice President and Dean of Student Advocacy
