A film crew visited the university in late June to meet with faculty and students, highlighting the department’s methodological research and collaboration with VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Each year, the Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM), highlights schools, departments and organizations in their Thought Leadership Film Series. This year, the Department of Biostatistics at the VCU School of Public Health was included in that exclusive series.

With more than 5,000 attendees at its annual event, the JSM is the largest gathering of statisticians and data scientists in North America, serving as a critical forum for exchanging ideas and the latest developments in statistical science.

JSM TV is an official component of the conference, and the highlight of the broadcast is the Thought Leadership Film Series. Screens around the venue displayed the JSM TV program and the Thought Leadership films, and all content is available online.

“I’m incredibly proud that our department was featured on JSM TV among only nine departments nationwide,” said Robert Perera, Ph.D., associate professor and interim chair of the department, who led the film effort. “The video highlighted our work with the Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center, showcasing how biostatistical expertise and methodological development drives impactful, interdisciplinary research. It’s exciting to see our contributions to cancer research and data science recognized on a national stage.”

Perera was one of several interviewees for the film, including Nolan Wages, Ph.D., professor and director of the Biostatistics Shared Resource (BSSR) at Massey; Dipankar Bandyopadhyay, Ph.D., professor; Jinze Liu, Ph.D., professor and director of Bioinformatics Shared Resource (BISR) at Massey; Niloofar Ramezani, Ph.D., associate professor; Ph.D. student Adam Funk; and Autumn Lanoye, Ph.D., associate professor of social and behavioral sciences. Several other faculty and students appear throughout the film.

In addition to the film series, three biostatistics faculty members presented at JSM in Nashville. Yongyun Shin, Ph.D., associate professor; and Na Bo, Ph.D., assistant professor; and Bandyopadhyay shared their research during the event.
