Fellows are full-time faculty members who are experts in basic science or clinical teaching and possess a deep understanding of medical education pedagogy.&nbsp; Beyond their primary teaching expertise, they are strong advocates for their colleagues&#8217; professional growth.&nbsp; They provide workshops and guidance and serve as a crucial link between faculty and the Office of Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development, ensuring faculty interests and needs are communicated and addressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-fill\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-black-color has-luminous-vivid-amber-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/forms.gle\/YWeen5suvVxW9wDs5\">Apply Here<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Time Commitment<br><\/strong>Approximately 10 hours of service per month between October 1, 2025 and June 30, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why participate?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Develop your academic portfolio in the scholarship of teaching and learning while connecting research to practice and reflecting on your medical education expertise.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide service to the University in the form of workshops, observations and consultations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contribute your knowledge, skills, and abilities to help faculty develop in their teaching, leadership, and scholarship.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be rewarded to advance an innovation or scholarly project in medical education.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Expectations<br><\/strong>The selected fellow will be expected to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Serve as a faculty liaison<\/strong>&nbsp;for the School of Medicine Dean\u2019s Office, guiding strategic discussions on the ethical and responsible adoption of AI and ensuring accessibility for the entire medical community.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lead a pioneering AI project that enhances a key aspect of medical education<\/strong>, focusing on areas like personalized learning and diagnostic simulations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Design and lead three workshops<\/strong>&nbsp;to build foundational AI literacy for faculty and students emphasizing ethical, accessible, and intergenerational use within the medical community.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Seek to disseminate scholarly wor<\/strong>k that demonstrate the project&#8217;s broader impact on research and scholarship.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>MEFFs will also maintain a written reflective journal throughout the fellowship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Learn more about former faculty fellows their experience and their projects!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>J. Provide a brief review of relevant literature.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Project Goals and Objectives:&nbsp;<\/strong>Specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals and objectives for your project.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Methodology:&nbsp;<\/strong>Briefly describe the proposed approach, including a description of the AI tools or techniques to be utilized.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Target audience for the project<\/strong>&nbsp;(e.g., medical students, residents, faculty).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Timeline for key project milestones over the year.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Evaluation plan:&nbsp;<\/strong>How will you measure the success and impact of your project?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Expected Outcomes and Impact:<\/strong>&nbsp;Describe the anticipated deliverables and the potential impact of your project on medical education at our institution.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Resource Needs:&nbsp;<\/strong>Identify any specific resources (e.g., software, data access, technical support) required for your project.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A list of at least two proposed workshops. The <strong>SOM FTA will be comprised of 12 selected faculty members<\/strong> and seek to cultivate a thriving community of practice that focuses on excellence in teaching and the scholarship of teaching and learning in health sciences education.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beginning in April 2025 and continuing through December 2025, these 12 FTA faculty will engage in professional development that enriches their understanding of pedagogical frameworks for inclusive and interactive teaching; and advance an educational research project or curriculum innovation.  <strong>The commitment of time is approximately 20 hours.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FTA faculty will be encouraged to present the results of their FTA engagement at the 2026 VCU Health Sciences Education Symposium in March 2026.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>FTA faculty will receive a $400 stipend<\/strong> that can be used for professional development or to support other scholarly endeavors.\u00a0 Additionally, instructional support, coaching and facilitated guidance will be provided to FTA faculty throughout the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>VCU SOM faculty at all levels teaching VCU SOM students or trainees are encouraged to apply.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Applications must be submitted by January 31, 2025.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Applicants will be notified by February 14, 2025.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSdF6QHe96ouLZiK3n8wT6oWulsmQMqINWyon_4A9lNSYmcHnQ\/viewform\">Apply Here<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Please contact Jody Hedstrom (<a href=\"mailto:jody.hedstrom@vcuhealth.org\">jody.hedstrom@vcuhealth.org<\/a>), Faculty Development Coordinator, if you have any questions or concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Selection criteria<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FTA committee will review each applicant\u2019s submission and selection criteria will be based on faculty experience, teaching statement, and potential impact of research project\/curriculum innovation on the <a href=\"https:\/\/medschool.vcu.edu\/about\/strategic-plan\/strategic-priorities\/education\/\">strategic priorities concerning education at VCU SOM<\/a>. \u00a0Faculty confidence levels around teaching, innovation, and medical education research are assessed to determine cohort groupings upon selection.\u00a0 There will be four cohorts with three faculty in each cohort.\u00a0 Cohorts will be determined to achieve participant diversity across disciplines and teaching expertise <em>(ie. This competitive fellowship is a one-year commitment and awards a $5,000 academic stipend upon completion of each year of the MEFF appointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSfZr6T30hE7bHw2GsQrnQo0OF5fuZCv1K1_pKuwbWTJe-0ArA\/viewform\">Apply here!<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Time Commitment<br><\/strong>Approximately 10 hours of service per month between July 31, 2023 and June 30, 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why participate?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Develop your academic portfolio in the scholarship of teaching and learning while connecting research to practice and reflecting on your medical education expertise.<\/li><li>Provide service to the University in the form of workshops, observations and consultations.<\/li><li>Contribute your knowledge, skills, and abilities to help faculty develop in their teaching, leadership, and scholarship.<\/li><li>Be rewarded to advance an innovation or scholarly project in medical education.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Expectations<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong>Utilizing their skill sets in medical education, MEFFs promote faculty development opportunities in their respective departments and will specifically connect with the larger SOM community by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>teaching workshops or leading a faculty learning community \/ book read,<\/li><li>providing teaching observations or educational consultations to peer faculty,<\/li><li>engaging with the Office of Faculty Affairs and SOM Faculty Development team to help plan and assess relevant activities, and,<\/li><li>contributing to an educational innovation project or program<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>MEFFs will also maintain a written reflective journal throughout the fellowship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Learn more about former faculty fellows their experience and their projects!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.vcu.edu\/somofa\/meff-21-22-kelly-harrell-phd-mpt\/\"><strong>Kelly Harrell, PhD, MPT<\/strong><\/a> (2021 and 2022)<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.vcu.edu\/somofa\/the-meff-experience-kellie-carlyle\/\"><strong>Kellie Carlyle, PhD, MPH<\/strong><\/a> (2019 and 2020)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Qualifications<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong>Medical Education Faculty Fellows are School of Medicine Faculty that are experts in basic science or clinical teaching and have expertise in a variety of health-education disciplines. They have working knowledge of pedagogical theories that support adult-learning, and have completed some level of graduate coursework in curriculum design, instructional strategies, the scholarship of teaching and learning, and\/or adult learning theory. MEFFs also have a strong interest in career development and faculty roles throughout the career stages.
