The search for a new Dean of the School of Dentistry is in the final stage and we can expect an announcement soon. The process has been slowed recently because of the holidays, response to the Omicron emergency, and launch of the new Epic system. Any sense of delay or lack of feedback is not intentional. These are extraordinary times and the School of Dentistry Dean search is of great importance to VCU. What is often a time-consuming process was made even more challenging by these environmental challenges. I appreciate your patience as we complete the final stages of the search.

Dear SoD Community:
It has been my pleasure to serve as chair of the School of Dentistry dean search committee. This message will share more about our search process and where we are in the search.
The search committee included many members of the School of Dentistry, leading members of the VCU academic community and other key stakeholders. As is typical for dean search committees, we were charged by Dr. Kellermann (the hiring official) to identify, evaluate and recommend qualified candidates, with the goal of hiring the best individual.
As is common practice with all VCU administrative leadership searches, the committee did not rank the candidates it recommended to Dr. Kellermann. Instead, we objectively identified each finalist\u2019s strengths, limitations and questions that might warrant exploration in the final stages of consideration.
We reviewed over 50 applicants to determine who should be invited for a virtual interview with the committee; we then recommended a small number of finalists for on-site interviews.
After each candidate interview, SOD faculty, staff and students had the opportunity to submit comments. All comments and letters of recommendation were considered by the committee and incorporated into its summary of strengths and limitations.
The candidate summaries and all materials were sent to Dr. Kellermann for his review. He also received letters, emails and comments from stakeholders and university administrators.
In this search, as in all other VCU dean searches, it is left to the hiring official to further narrow the list and \u2014 in consultation with the university provost and president \u2014 select the best candidate to lead the school. That process is currently underway.

Dear School of Dentistry colleagues,
We are rapidly approaching the final stages of the search process. The excellence and strength of your school attracted the strongest field of applicants in recent memory. That is a testament to your hard work and the school\u2019s leadership. The search committee carefully vetted this list and following a thoughtful and objective process, advanced four candidates for on-campus visits. Those took place over the past two months. Many of you participated in their talks, met with them or otherwise provided input. All of it was taken into consideration by the search committee, synthesized and shared with me. I am grateful for the leadership of the committee chair, Dean Joseph DiPiro, and the members of the committee, for bringing us to this point.
Based on the collective input, we are bringing two outside candidates \u2013 Dr. Lyndon Cooper and Dr. Andre Ritter, back for additional meetings with potential research collaborators, key stakeholders and other university leaders. In contrast to the last visits, these meetings will be less public but no less important. Regardless of the outcome of this phase of the process, Dr. Clara Spatafore will continue to serve as interim dean until the new dean is in place. She has my full confidence and support.
The future of the School of Dentistry is bright. I am grateful for your commitment to the school, the profession of dentistry and its mission of teaching, research and service to the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The survey link for your comments will remain open until Thursday, October 28th for candidate #3 and until Friday, October 29th for candidate #4 at https:\/\/blogs.vcu.edu\/soddeansearch\/
The Search Committee will reconvene soon to review comments received and prepare a summary that will go to Dr. Kellermann. So, you may not hear anything more for a few weeks, or possibly between now and the holidays. During that time there will be active contacts with one or more candidates, and a second stage of on-site interviews with selected individuals. Also, it is the time when reference contacts are made and background checks conducted.

On Sunday, October 3rd the first on-campus SoD dean candidate interview will begin and will conclude on October 5th. There will be an open session for Faculty and Staff members on Tuesday, October 5th from 12:15 to 1:15 pm in Perkinson Rm 3121 and an open session for all students at 4:45 to 5:30 pm October 5th in Perkinson Rms 3121 & 3105. The candidate is Dr. Clara Spatafore, Interim Dean. Attached are Dr. Spatafore’s CV and diversity statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our top 4 candidates have agreed to come to campus as finalists. We are working on constructing their visit itineraries now, and you will all have the opportunity\u00a0to meet each candidate. Three days before each visit we will make the candidate name known and distribute their\u00a0CV and diversity statement.\u00a0 The visit dates are Oct 3-5,\u00a0 6-8, 18-20, and 20-22. We expect candidates to arrive by dinner on the first day, followed by a full day of interviews, and then depart the afternoon of the third day.\u00a0 More details will be posted next week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For two full days last week the SoD Dean Search Committee met and interviewed semi-finalists for the position. From those interviews, 4 stellar\u00a0candidates have been recommended as finalists.\u00a0 They will begin visiting campus the first week of October. When dates and times are finalized a visit schedule will be sent out.\u00a0 Candidate names with their CV’s and the diversity statements will be distributed 3 days before each visit. During these visits the candidates will meet with the groups or individuals listed below.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
