School of Social Work

No. 28 M.S.W. Program in the U.S.

In partnership with VCU’s Center for Community Engagement and Impact, the School of World Studies, the departments of psychology, sociology and political science, and the School of Education, the School of Social Work is participating in a winter coat drive from Nov. 9-23.

The Southwood Apartment community, also known as La Mancha, a multicultural neighborhood in Richmond’s southside, will benefit from this drive. New and gently used coats for adults and children are needed equally at this time. The goal is to distribute the items to the residents by the beginning of December before the harsh winter weather arrives. In addition to coats, the partnership also requests monetary donations for coat cleaning before delivery to the community. Delivering a clean coat demonstrates that we, as a university, care about the dignity and worth of the individual receiving the item.

Winter coat drive, Nov. 9-23. Please drop off your coats in the specially designated coat collection box. New and gently used coats for children and adults are desperately needed for the residents of the Southwood Apartments, also known as La Mancha, this season. Please consider donating a coat to a resident in need. Providing a clean coat preserves the dignity of the coat recipient. Please consider a monetary donation in addition to a coat donation to help offset the expense of the cleaning of all donated coats. (Graphics of snowflakes, holiday sweater, mittens and earmuffs.)

For anyone currently working remotely who wishes to participate in this drive, donations for a coat purchase or coat cleanings may be coordinated with Allison Bell via email: [email protected]. The School of Social Work’s coat donation box will be located on the third floor of the Academic Learning Commons outside of the Dean’s Suite, Monday-Friday 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

For the locations of the other donation boxes, please contact the following unit representatives:

Boxes will be placed in the designated locations by the end of the day on Nov. 9.

For more information about this community engagement project, please contact Anita Nadal with VCU’s Center for Community Engagement and Impact at [email protected].

Lastly, the School of Social Work is collecting winter hats and gloves for Richmond’s housing insecure through November and early December. You may find a basket for these donations inside the Dean’s Suite.
