Recently, federal agencies (FBI and CISA) issued a PSA for awareness of threats involved in conducting COVID-19-related research. Targeting and compromising of U.S. organizations has been identified.

Activities observed include, attempting to identify and illicitly obtain valuable intellectual property (IP) and public health data related to vaccines, treatments, and testing from networks and personnel affiliated with COVID-19-related research. These attempts at potential information theft jeopardize the delivery of secure, effective, and efficient treatment options.

VCU’s International Affairs Security Work Group continues to monitor VCU’s related activities and readiness against updates from the federal government and higher education community associations. We ask you and your teams to remain heightened in your vigilance of information security. If you aren’t sure what this entails, or would like assistance, please ask – resources are available.

Formulating security plans: VCU’s DMS (Data Management System). Getting your questions answered re: properly securing study team’s data and information, or to share other related concerns: VCU’s Chief Information Security Officer, Dan Han, at s2dhan@vcu.edu or utilize the VCUHelpline for inquires or concerns 24/7/365.
