Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is announcing a public workshop entitled “Medical Extended Reality: Toward Best Evaluation Practices for Virtual and Augmented Reality in Medicine,” which will be held on March 5, 2020. Extended reality (XR) devices incorporate objects and environments from both the physical and digital or virtual world. During this workshop, we will discuss improving patient outcomes with the safe and effective medical uses of XR devices including:

  • Evaluation techniques for hardware, 
  • Standards development,
  • Assessment challenges for applications of XR in medicine,
  • Critical gaps that may impede medical XR device development, innovation, and evaluation
