Whether through volunteering, civic engagement or simply lifting up a classmate, your service to our Richmond community bridges classroom knowledge with real-world impact.

For our faculty and staff: your service to our university — mentoring students, guiding shared governance and supporting campus life — is the foundation upon which VCU thrives. Your dedicated stewardship shapes the environment where our students can successfully learn and grow.

I am reminded of the line penned by Charles Dickens in Our Mutual Friend: “No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of it for another.” In a period of history marked by harsh class divides, poverty and institutional indifference, Dickens believed that society improves through acts of service, personal kindness and mutual support.

There are many ways in which you can be of service this semester. We talked with director Brandin Conrath, Ph.D., about what it means to “shift” education, why collaboration beats working in silos and what keeps him hopeful about the future of learning.

The mission

When people first hear “Shift Education Lab,” what do you hope they understand about the work right away?

The goal is for them to recognize the work as truly shifting education. It’s an opportunity hub of creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship in service to finding solutions that support K-12 education. It serves the broader mission of VCU’s Office of Innovation and Strategic Design to lead at the cutting edge of front-end innovation and prototyping new interdisciplinary collaborations.

You recently stepped into the director role. What vision are you bringing into this next phase?

My vision really sits at the establishment of the lab. I don’t want Shift Education to be another siloed research lab of the kind that often exists in higher education. I want it to be much more, an amalgamation of research, outreach and teaching that brings people together to bridge the gap between practice and higher education. We’re all in this together to support students, so why aren’t we working together?

What gap or opportunity in education is the lab working to address?

The field of education is always changing, with new insights on how or what students should be learning. Shift Education Lab seeks to address a critical opportunity: moving from traditional forms of instruction to more innovative methods that prepare learners to be scientifically literate and to thrive in a modern technological society. Front-end innovation is a process that moves quickly to deliver valuable insights and inform new directions.

What does innovation look like when it’s grounded in real classrooms?

Innovation in this context is grounded in real classrooms by integrating new curricula, tools and experiences directly into students’ learning environment. One example is our integration of virtual reality (VR) headsets into middle school classrooms to support STEM instruction.

What was the catalyst for the Shift Education Lab?

The VCU Shift Education Lab was made possible in part through critical support from the Bob and Anna Lou Schaberg Foundation. A lifelong educator, Anna Lou Schaberg has had an enduring impact on education in the Richmond region, and her support and thought leadership around the intersection of innovation and education helped catalyze the work that became the Shift Education Lab. Her generosity and vision will continue to benefit students and educators for years to come as the lab expands its partnerships and creates new opportunities for innovative teaching and learning.

Collaboration in practice

What are educators and students telling you they need most right now?

Right now, educators and students are seeking support in facilitating non-traditional learning experiences to explore innovation and STEM. It’s all about discovering and prototyping new opportunities for students to learn.

The lab works amongst VCU, K-12 schools and community partners. What becomes possible when those groups collaborate intentionally?

So many groups nationwide are working in support of our K-12 students, from non-profits and curriculum developers to teachers, administrators, higher education and researchers, but there are few conversations across these groups. We want to bring together all of these partners to leverage their individual strengths to create greater educational impact. Public research universities like VCU are natural conveners and leaders in this space.

How do you make sure innovation efforts are community-informed?

The lab operates “in service of” its partners, tailoring its support to their specific needs, whether those are educators or students. Shift Education Lab designs with, not for, partners. A partner might reach out to us for use of our technologies or for professional development in areas like extended reality, STEM data science, LEGO Serious Play or design thinking. We then collaboratively develop a solution.

Can you share a project that captures what the Shift Education Lab is trying to accomplish?

One project that really captures the essence of Shift Education Lab is our study abroad program in Lisbon, Portugal. This VCU spring break program is a collaboration between the Office of Innovation and Strategic Design, Shift Education Lab, the Global Education Office and the VCU School of Education’s Center for Teacher Leadership. It’s an intensive one-credit course that gives pre-service teachers a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in Portugal’s international education system.

Also, this spring, I worked with some fantastic people to launch our first session with several students at our partner school, United Lisbon International School. We were excited for two reasons: VCU students built foundational pedagogical skills in a highly regarded international school, and they took part in a cross-cultural exchange that built global awareness through their practice teaching. Our team was even able to offer LEGO Serious Play for sixth graders at United Lisbon.

What’s next on the horizon?

A second project in development also speaks to the essence of collaboration. It’s focused on supporting data science in STEM education, and while I can’t share too much yet, our partners will include the VCU Rice Rivers Center, The Pennsylvania State University, a non-profit organization and local secondary science teachers and students. The end goal of all of our work is to make a meaningful contribution to the field of education, whether that’s helping teachers change the way they teach or helping students think more critically about STEM and the world around them.

How does VCU’s interdisciplinary culture shape the way the lab solves problems?

Shift Education Lab reflects and builds on VCU’s interdisciplinary culture by bringing together expertise from across the university. We partner closely with the School of Education and the School of Life Sciences to take on complex topics like sustainable, data-driven biology curricula. When we have an idea, the first thing we ask is how we can engage the VCU community and our current partners, or whether there are new partners to seek out.

In what ways does the lab reflect VCU’s broader role in Richmond?

As an urban research university, VCU is positioned to create lasting impact in the Richmond region, and the lab partners with major school divisions like Henrico County Public Schools and non-profit groups like AI Ready RVA. We work in service of our partners to address their educational needs and support their students. We’re here to provide the space to test and prototype bold ideas.

The road ahead

How do you sustain momentum in work that’s long-term and systems-focused?

So much of our work is long-term and systemically complex, so momentum across our projects and partnerships ebbs and flows. I just received feedback on an article I submitted early last fall. Luckily, I’m surrounded by a great team that helps me organize and prioritize what needs to be done and when.

What gives you hope about the future of education right now?

There are immense challenges facing education right now, but there is also hope. What gives me hope is that there are still students out there who are excited to learn and want to try new things. It actually feels great when I don’t have enough VR headsets for students on an open house night. We need to foster that excitement through innovative educational opportunities. It’s all for the students.

If someone worked with the Shift Education Lab five years from now, what would you hope they see?

In five years, my hope is that anyone working with Shift Education Lab will see a global network of collaborative education sites connecting educators, researchers, students and organizations, where innovation and collaboration are the standard, not the exception.

VCU’s Shift Labs bring students, faculty and community partners into the same room to test bold ideas and build practical solutions. Rather than teaching students to build AI systems, the program focuses on how to apply existing AI tools to everyday problems: streamlining workflows, supporting decision-making and boosting productivity on the job.

The certificate builds on VCU’s practical AI undergraduate minor, an interdisciplinary program established in 2024.

“That program had a very similar emphasis on how to use AI, and it was meant to be accessible to all students,” said Mariah Crilley, Ph.D., assistant vice provost of university interdisciplinary programs. “Not everyone needs to build AI systems. But nearly everyone will benefit from understanding how to use AI thoughtfully and effectively in their work.”

The curriculum is built around two required courses. The first, AI Foundations and Applied Strategy, centers on business applications and workplace efficiency. The second, Artificial Intelligence and Ethical Problem-Solving, is offered through the Department of Philosophy and examines AI ethics through real-world case studies.

Students round out the certificate with two electives chosen from disciplines across the university, including education, health care, business and public policy, allowing them to shape the program around their own career goals.

“This certificate is designed to help professionals solve real problems they’re already facing,” Crilley said. “Whether that’s streamlining workflows, generating new ideas or improving decision-making, participants can immediately apply what they’re learning.”

Crilley said the program was built so that skills transfer across tools and industries rather than tying students to one platform.

“Rather than teaching a single platform or tool, we’re helping professionals develop the skills and confidence to adapt, evaluate new technologies and apply AI responsibly throughout their careers,” Crilley said.

Applications for the Graduate Certificate in Applied Artificial Intelligence are due Aug. 7. Learn more about the program.

This story was originally published by VCU News. Read the original.

Original reporting by Konrad Solberg with VCU News A new online graduate certificate from VCU is giving working professionals a way to build AI skills without needing a technical background. And we generally have two paths to choose from:

Resisting change by focusing on what we are shifting away from and letting discomfort drive our narrative.

Embracing change by adjusting our sails, staying flexible and leaning into the discomfort.

In short, we have the opportunity to treat change as an institutional experiment, rather than a threat to our routines.

This doesn’t mean that we should ignore the discomfort. Simply, we must work within these challenges to navigate the transition with intellectual and operational flexibility.

And you don’t have to navigate change alone. VCU offers a robust set of resources that are specifically designed to support employees, managers and teams through periods of organizational change, including:

The VCU Learning Development and Organizational Culture Team (LDOC) offers specialized professional development courses, including Addressing Barriers to Change (ABC) Facilitation.

The RamStrong Hub and Employee Assistance Program (EAP) offer confidential counseling and resources to better cope with change.

During periods of change and transition, it’s important to maintain open lines of communication and to lean on peer-to-peer support. By doing so, we can solve problems collaboratively and foster a shared sense of resilience.

VCU was built on a foundation of change, growth and innovation. And as we navigate change together, we ensure the university continues to best serve our students, faculty, staff and communities.

Warm regards,

William C. At Virginia Commonwealth University, researchers are adamant that the path forward is led through collaboration. As part of VCU Convergence, an interdisciplinary team of neurodegeneration experts is advancing full-cycle brain health research, from bench science to community-based clinical health, and back again. We spoke with Faika Zanjani, Ph.D., a VCU gerontology professor and associate dean of research of the College of Health Professions. Zanjani, the VCU Convergence neurodegeneration theme faculty lead discusses the urgency of her research and why VCU is positioned to lead and what gives her hope.

Why are neurodegenerative diseases becoming such an urgent public health issue?

By 2050, the prevalence is projected to rise to nearly 13 million. Alzheimer’s is the most common cause of dementia; it is prevalent in a third of adults over the age of 85. Dementia devastates lives due to the loss of memory and the impairment of language, problem-solving and other thinking abilities.

What makes VCU particularly well-positioned to lead work in neurodegeneration?

We have the brain power! We already have important neurodegeneration work underway at VCU, but we need to work together. Between 1987 and 2024, there were over 300 publications on dementia and Alzheimer’s disease with a VCU affiliation. More than half were published in the last five years. VCU has almost 20 active National Institute of Health (NIH) grants relevant to dementia and nearly 300 NIH grant years in dementia across all funding activities.

One area for us to collectively explore is modifiable brain health risk factors. Currently, we have no evidence-based programs to offer individuals coming to the doctor’s office presenting with dementia risks. We will focus on establishing a VCU Neurodegeneration longitudinal repository to follow brain health and modifiable risk factors over time. Modifiable risk factors are estimated to account for 45 percent of attributable dementia risk; thus, as a leading cause of death without a current cure, more brain health prevention strategies can be developed with a comprehensive registry.

How does the convergence model help researchers tackle problems that traditional structures struggle to solve?

VCU Convergence inherently represents transdisciplinary, translational team science. Having VCU support a convergent design breaks barriers that come from institutional support.

Are there any partnerships that you are excited about?

Yes, all of them! College of Health Professions, Neurology, Nursing, the Division of Community Engagement and VCU Health have already been excellent partners. These relationships need to continue and be expanded. The Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology and Medicinal Chemistry are doing groundbreaking work. We are working on integrating them into VCU Convergence. We are also actively working on establishing a brain health and Alzheimer’s Disease and Alzheimer’s Disease-Related Dementias (AD/ADRD) biomarker lab to expand our capacity to address groundbreaking screening, diagnosis and treatment care models. And the local chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association and the Span Center, our local Area Agency on Aging, have been excellent model partners.

How do you ensure this research ultimately improves the quality of life for patients and families?

Helping families is at our core. Our convergence is based on the Richmond Brain Health Initiative, which was established to provide community-facing AD/ADRD support. The initiative will be central to our progression, raising awareness, offering risk-reduction interventions and navigating brain health services.

What gives you the greatest hope right now for neurodegeneration research?

The cell-to-community approaches already happening here at VCU to address AD/ADRD give us confidence and optimism that the next breakthrough is developing right here in Richmond. We are standing on the shoulders of behemoth chronic disease care models at VCU, such as cancer, heart disease, liver disease, mental health and traumatic brain injury, and know it takes a village to improve survivorship and quality. We plan to capitalize on these strengths and collaborate to build a better model for AD/ADRD treatments and interventions.

Are there emerging technologies or breakthroughs that could significantly change how we detect or treat neurodegenerative diseases?

Yes. We are actively working to establish a brain health and AD/ADRD biomarker lab to expand our capacity to innovate and develop groundbreaking screening, diagnosis and treatment care models. We just started offering AD/ADRD treatment infusions and are one of eight health care centers in Virginia offering CMS GUIDE services to support AD/ADRD families.

What opportunities does this convergence model create for students?

We already have a Richmond Brain Health Initiative work-study and VCU Vertically Integrated Project team for students to get involved directly . Students can learn by working with us, but they are also the key to future innovations.

If you could change one thing about how society approaches brain health, what would it be?

We need to reduce AD/ADRD risk by building and increasing cognitive and physical reserve. Research suggests that universal education and lifestyle behaviors have been major contributors to brain health. This strong effect was limited to early life, because that is when we invest most into our education and lifestyle. Similar efforts need to be made across an individual’s lifespan, to provide brain health agency and dignity into old age. We need to make sure we are investing in a lifespan, cell-to-community approach to brain health.

What’s one takeaway you hope people leave with after learning about this work?

That AD/ADRD is not inevitable as we grow older as a society. There are brain health approaches we already know that can make a difference. And we need to continue innovating to build for ourselves and future generations. VCU is committed to this mission and is actively working to address neurodegeneration and neuroregeneration for all of society.

Learn more about VCU Convergence.

Nearly seven million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease, a number projected to nearly double by 2050.
