Robert L. Findling, M.D., M.B.A., Professor & Department Chair in the VCU School of Medicine, Psychiatry, and Patrick R. Mullen, Ph.D., Professor & Chair, Department of Counseling and Special Education, discussed convergence at VCU and how researchers are teaming up to address this timely and pressing issue.

Can you briefly discuss the impact that social media platforms can have on children?

Findling: Social media platforms’ impact on youths can be really variable. Both the amount of time spent on social media and the content of those platforms can really matter.

Mullen: Social media can play a good or bad role in youth mental health. Some youth will find connections with peers who share experiences similar to their own. However, any engagement in social media increases the chances that they will be exposed to inappropriate, violent or hate-based content.

Social media can also adversely affect their well-being. In a 2019 study by Riehm and colleagues, youth who spend three hours per day on social media may have a heightened risk for mental health concerns. Social media use may also adversely impact sleep quality and duration, which may also contribute to poor mental health.

What role do scholars and researchers play in helping address the mental health impact on young people?

Findling: Understanding the impacts and their determinants can matter. And the questions are not simple — that is why research of methodological rigor can help inform parents and policies. It is essential to recall that association is not the same as causation — and disentangling the two, particularly with social media, holds the promise of being most informative.

Mullen: Researchers play a role in understanding the prevalence and impact of social media use and can partner with community members and practitioners in development efforts to intervene and support youth.

The rate at which young people engage in social media is increasing. According to a recent Pew Research Center Survey, 73 percent of teens go on YouTube daily. The same survey noted that a little less than half the teens surveyed, 46 percent, report being online “almost constantly,” compared with 24 percent reported “almost constant usage” in 2014-2015. Younger age groups are also using social media, with 38 percent of 8- to 12-year-olds having accounts. This rate of social media usage may result in addictive behaviors related to social media usage, with teens admitting it would be difficult to give up the habit.

What are you doing through the Convergence Mental Health initiative to examine the effects of social media on children?

Findling: Convergence Mental Health has initiated a school Mental Health initiative. Its goal is to come up with means to address challenges that can impact children in schools. An interdisciplinary approach that can consider the issue from multiple perspectives can really help disentangle this complicated and important issue. Convergence Mental Health is a framework for fostering this kind of work.

Mullen: The school-based mental health convergence initiative is in its early stages, but through this work, we can cultivate innovative opportunities, create systems of support and prepare current and future mental health professionals to address the negative effects of social media on youth. We are bringing together experts from diverse disciplines alongside practitioners to cultivate new ideas and approaches to support students.

How can a transdisciplinary approach help solve problems like this?

Findling: Transdisciplinary approaches are really the best way to go. Mental Health is a “team sport,” and bringing different perspectives and approaches to complex problems holds the promise of innovative solutions.

Mullen: Youth mental health, in general, is a “wicked problem” of our time. It’s a problem that takes assembling scholars from diverse fields, paired with mental health practitioners, families, and youth themselves, to move toward a solution. We can approach social media use among youth through diverse professional lenses that integrate counseling with public health, social work, and family systems, and, in doing so, help examine the issue and ways to address it through a transdisciplinary focus.

What responsibility do universities such as VCU have in helping address such a large societal problem?

Mullen: Across our campus, we have leading scholars in their respective mental health fields, as well as highly touted training programs and responsive community engagement initiatives. Taken together, we are well-positioned to serve as an incubator for challenges like this one.

The Office of the Provost team sat down with two leading experts at Virginia Commonwealth University to discuss social media and its impact on youth mental health in Virginia. These topics anchored the dialogue the first Convergence Cafe.

Hosted by the VCU Office of Convergence Initiatives, a transdisciplinary collaboration connector across VCU. The event drew together faculty, staff, and researchers for an informal conversation about AI, the environment, and their intersections. Panelists included Chris Gough, Ph.D. executive director, VCU Rice Rivers Center, Preetam Ghosh, Ph.D., professor of computer science and James Fritz, Ph.D. associate professor of philosophy.

The conversation shifted from promise to tradeoffs. Panelists spoke candidly about the limits of technology, including AI hallucination, citations to nonexistent studies, and generated images filled with errors.

Much of the discussion orbited the skyrocketing costs of AI. As data centers use increasingly enormous amounts of water and power, the communities they occupy feel those effects. hi. They explored how much strain a community’s water supply or the grid can handle before it’s too much.

The group also drew comparisons to climate change, with unknown tipping points and the lack of incentive to slow down on their own. Meaningful limits, some suggested, will likely take coordinated, global action.

Other participants voiced concerns on AI governance and AI regulations, citing little transparency about where the technology is headed and whether it can be controlled.

Questions like these deserve the combined expertise of people from many fields. Stepping outside our individual silos, which can be hard to avoid, opens up perspectives that are critical to finding solutions. Each brings different ways of seeing the world and imagining what comes next. VCU Convergence is about creating more opportunities for those perspectives to come together, ask new questions and turn shared curiosity into action.

At its heart, VCU Convergence is also about taking on the “wicked problems” that resist easy answers. Challenges like mental health, neurodegeneration and the responsible use of AI are interconnected and constantly evolving; progress in one area can reveal new challenges in another. No single discipline can address that complexity alone. Convergence brings together different forms of expertise — including community members — to better understand these problems, adapt as they change and build solutions that reflect the full complexity of the world around us.

We’ve recently awarded 15 planning grants connecting 70 faculty members across disciplines. And we are just getting started. Our new VCU Convergence website highlights the work underway, the people making it possible and new opportunities to get involved as we continue building what comes next.

Sincerely,

Daniel Gutierrez, Ph.D., LPC, CSAC
Assistant Vice Provost, Office for University Convergence Initiatives

Explore the new VCU Convergence website

Research and impacts

VIDEO: Life Design at VCU

VCU’s Life Design program encourages students to explore their interests, experiment and learn along the way. When he was a junior faculty member in Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of Social Work, he served on the occasional universitywide committee, but his classroom was his primary home.

As his leadership roles grew, including serving as the school’s director of field instruction, associate dean for research and community engagement, and eventually interim dean, Davey broadened his perspective. Now serving in VCU’s Office of the Provost as vice provost for faculty recruitment, he has been merging academia and administration through the Faculty Fellows Program, which he established in 2018.

“I wanted to give other people the chance to get exposure to central administration,” Davey said. “I thought I would always be a professor. Fellows gain administrative experience, which could introduce a career option outside the classroom, and they share their faculty perspectives directly with VCU leadership, helping to create and implement initiatives.

“Faculty expertise is needed in so many instances of administration,” Davey said. “It’s a win-win. Multiple stakeholders, including VCU Faculty Senate leadership, have asked academic affairs to issue clear and specific guidance on this topic.

Here are the primary points you should know.

Faculty will teach their course(s) in the modality originally scheduled. Please see the 2023 welcome message from senior vice provost for faculty affairs, Dr. Mangala Subramaniam.

Beginning spring 2024, new course modality definitions will take effect. If there is a need to change the course modality, this is done prior to the beginning of the semester following protocols within the school. A course modality change during the semester requires an exception request made by a school/college dean to the Office of the Provost via the interim senior vice provost for academic affairs.

Face-to-face means everyone is in the same physical location at the same time. Faculty who find it necessary to miss class for any reason, including illness or travel, will follow their school/college procedures for ensuring the course content is delivered. The procedures may include as options: rescheduling the class, providing a recorded lecture or other asynchronous content, teaching synchronously via Zoom or securing a substitute. Moving a one-off class period to Zoom is not an option unless it is part of an academic affairs-approved school/college procedure. Please consult your dean’s office for more information.

Students who sign up for face-to-face classes are expected to attend in-person. Please see VCU’s attendance policy. Faculty are not expected to provide students with live Zoom links or record their lectures for later viewing in Canvas by students who did not attend. Students who miss class may be directed to follow up with classmates and/or the instructor to obtain the material.

For pedagogical reasons, faculty may wish to incorporate supplementary content to be posted in Canvas online and made available consistently to all students.

Hybrid means a class is offered some of the time face-to-face and some of the time fully online on a predetermined schedule that is posted before the start of the semester and clearly indicated with dates in the syllabus. The rules for a face-to-face class govern the hybrid class on the dates when everyone is scheduled to be together in person. The course will be delivered based on the predetermined schedule or modality and cannot change after the semester is underway except in extenuating circumstances. Such a change will be managed by the school/college dean or dean designee.

Hyflex means the faculty are always face-to-face in a physical classroom, but students may choose their modality. Faculty teaching in the hyflex modality are in-person for every class. The face-to-face rules for faculty absences apply to faculty teaching in the hyflex modality.

Technology must be appropriately robust in hyflex classrooms. Before classes are scheduled in the hyflex modality, the dean’s office must verify that the learning experience will be adequately immersive for students who attend online.

Fully online means everyone is 100% online in the university’s LMS, Canvas.

Traditional face-to-face programs may offer some course sections fully online.

However, face-to-face programs must be available primarily in-person. Students enrolled in face-to-face programs should not be able to complete their program fully online. Programs where students can earn 50% or more of the credential online require SACSCOC notification as a substantive change. School/college deans should consult with the Office of the Provost via the interim senior vice provost for academic affairs if there are any questions.

VCU-approved fully online programs have Z-codes in Banner and are located on the admissions application.

Faculty teaching fully online sections must be aware that their student roster may include a combination of students who are enrolled in traditional face-to-face programs and students who are enrolled in fully online programs.

VCU Online has talented instructional designers who can assist with developing engaging fully online courses and programs.

VCU is committed to providing equal access to its academic programs, including information, digital technologies, and resources, to students with disabilities as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This includes developing accessible courses and providing reasonable accommodation as described in an Accommodation Letter from – for the Monroe Park campus – Student Accessibility and Educational Opportunity (SAEO) or – for the MCV campus – the Division of Academic Success (DAS). Students with disabilities are held to the same academic standards as other students with or without accommodation. VCU implements accessibility standards for university Electronic and Information Technology (“EIT”) and user support services for individuals with disabilities. All university EIT is expected to comply with the VCU Web Standards & Guidelines. Captioning of videos and other media is required as set forth in the Captioning standard, and any media that is shared as part of a course must be available in a captioned format, whether it is created by faculty or publicly available (e.g., YouTube). Before scheduling a modality other than face-to-face, faculty must consider accessibility requirements for online instruction. For more information, see Accessibility and Reasonable Accommodation policy.

We are aware that some students have started live streaming face-to-face classes from their own devices to classmates who are not in attendance. Faculty may prohibit this practice, and they may restrict students from recording their lectures without prior permission, provided the policy is clearly indicated in the syllabus. If prohibited by faculty, these practices may be considered a violation of the Student Conduct and Academic Integrity policy.

In the event of inclement weather or emergency, the university will issue guidance regarding class cancellations and the possibility of temporarily switching modalities. Faculty will follow university guidance.

While VCU is in the process of defining what it means to be a “hybrid university,” and while we are expanding high-quality fully online academic programming, the reality is that the in-person place-based experience has been and will continue to be central to VCU.

In fact, a mission critical part of what makes VCU special and what attracts students to us is our urban location in the heart of Richmond.

Thank you for all you do to promote academic and student success. I hope this course modality guidance will provide you with what you need to ensure both consistency and guidance across the instructional experience.

Best regards,

Andrew T.
