New graduate certificate helps professionals put AI to work

A new online graduate certificate from VCU is giving working professionals a way to build AI skills without needing a technical background.
The 12-credit Graduate Certificate in Applied Artificial Intelligence launches this fall, with applications due Aug. 7. Rather than teaching students to build AI systems, the program focuses on how to apply existing AI tools to everyday problems: streamlining workflows, supporting decision-making and boosting productivity on the job.
The certificate builds on VCU’s practical AI undergraduate minor, an interdisciplinary program established in 2024.
“That program had a very similar emphasis on how to use AI, and it was meant to be accessible to all students,” said Mariah Crilley, Ph.D., assistant vice provost of university interdisciplinary programs. “Not everyone needs to build AI systems. But nearly everyone will benefit from understanding how to use AI thoughtfully and effectively in their work.”
The curriculum is built around two required courses. The first, AI Foundations and Applied Strategy, centers on business applications and workplace efficiency. The second, Artificial Intelligence and Ethical Problem-Solving, is offered through the Department of Philosophy and examines AI ethics through real-world case studies.
Students round out the certificate with two electives chosen from disciplines across the university, including education, health care, business and public policy, allowing them to shape the program around their own career goals.
“This certificate is designed to help professionals solve real problems they’re already facing,” Crilley said. “Whether that’s streamlining workflows, generating new ideas or improving decision-making, participants can immediately apply what they’re learning.”
Crilley said the program was built so that skills transfer across tools and industries rather than tying students to one platform.
“Rather than teaching a single platform or tool, we’re helping professionals develop the skills and confidence to adapt, evaluate new technologies and apply AI responsibly throughout their careers,” Crilley said.
