Maghboeba Mosavel, Ph.D., the current head of VCU’s Division of Community Engagement is being promoted to vice provost, effective immediately, said Fotis Sotiropoulos, Ph.D., VCU’s Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs.

“Dr. Mosavel has done an outstanding job of both reorganizing and energizing VCU’s Community Engagement team after it was moved into the Office of the Provost – all while ensuring that it remained focused on developing and strengthening relationships and partnerships across communities connected to our university. She’s also helping us get our arms around everything VCU does under the label of ‘community engagement,’ which is no easy task given just how pervasive these activities are across our campuses. As she often reminds us, community engagement is part of VCU’s DNA.”

Under Dr. Mosavel’s leadership, the Community Engagement team just completed an extensive application process to earn reclassification as a Carnegie Community Engaged University. VCU has held that classification since its inception and is seeking it for the third time.

VCU’s two community engagement outposts, The Mary and Frances Youth Center and the VCU Health Hub are thriving with activity, programming, and a steady stream of new ideas.

That includes launching the first-ever VCU Advanced Certificate in Youth Development Management. This program, developed in collaboration with RichmondYDN, is designed to equip professionals with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in the dynamic field of youth development.

“Every day, I feel deeply privileged to do work that I believe in so strongly. It is an honor to collaborate with passionate, committed individuals both within VCU and among our community partners. I am grateful for the opportunity to work alongside those who ask hard questions, share diverse forms of expertise, and contribute meaningfully to building thriving communities,” said Mosavel. “Above all, I am most proud to work with the extraordinary Community Engagement team in the Division of Community Engagement. Through their practice, programming, and daily commitment, they each bring to life a true culture of care, excellence, and community-centered engagement.”

In addition to her Community Engagement leadership, Dr. Mosavel is a professor in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences in the VCU School of Public Health. Her research focuses include: cancer prevention and control, obesity within the context of social determinants, public perception and policy advocacy related to oral health, and examining public participation in genomic biobanking efforts.
