VCU School of Pharmacy has its own local column now! “Dr. Rx” made its debut in the December 2009 edition of the Richmond-based Fifty Plus Magazine.

Each month, a different SOP faculty member (or alum or preceptor) will serve as guest writer for the column. The question-and-answer format allows writers to formulate questions of their own or to answer reader-generated questions.

December’s Dr. Rx is Patty Slattum, associate professor and director of the school’s Geriatric Pharmacotherapy Program. She addressed the question of how OTC sleep aids work, and if they work.

January’s Dr. Rx will be Tyler Stevens, assistant professor, who will offer helpful New Year’s advice for people who might not realize all their pharmacist and pharmacy can do.

Fifty Plus, a 12-year-old publication that is free to readers, has a monthly circulation of 30,000. You can find it at more than 400 locations in Central Virginia, including CVS, Ukrop’s and McDonald’s locations and many libraries, museums and malls. Or to see the debut column online (and as it appears in print), visit http://www.richmondparents.com/50_pdfs.htm, click on “December 2009” and search the word pharmacy.
