The 116th American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Annual Meeting has lots in store for VCU School of Pharmacy. More than 20 faculty and staff plan to attend July 11-15 at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Md. This year, that includes two School of Medicine faculty. The  annual meeting theme is “Pharmacy  Education 2015.”

Among the events of note:

  • July 11: Dean Joseph T. DiPiro will offer a half-day “Excellence in Publishing” workshop for current or prospective authors submitting their work to scholarly publications. (He served as editor of the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education for 12 years.)

    The Weaver Award
  • July 12: During the opening general session, VCU School of Pharmacy’s Pharmacist Collaborative Care and Outreach in the Community program will be presented the Lawrence C. Weaver Transformative Community Service Award.
  • July 12-13: SOP posters will be available for viewing. Contributors (some of whom also will attend the meeting) include Dave Dixon, Krista Donohoe, Brigitte Sicat and Patty Slattum.
  • July 13: Donohoe will be sworn in as chairwoman-elect of the Laboratory Instructors Special Interest Group (SIG).
  • July 14: During the Tuesday general session, School of Pharmacy professor David Holdford will be presented the Rufus A. Lyman Award.
  • K.C. Ogbonna will be sworn in as chairman-elect of the Geriatric Pharmacy SIG.
  • Sean Bates, executive director of postgraduate educational programs, reports that the SOP Office of Continuing Education is providing a record 67 of the meeting’s sessions for continuing education units. The School of Pharmacy’s Phartech team created the learning management system where AACP CE attendees register and evaluate programs and where their participation is reported.
  • Among the VCU presenters on July 14:
    –School of Medicine faculty Alan Dow and Kelly Lockeman will present “Assessment Strategies in Interprofessional Education.”
    –SOP faculty Donohoe and Ogbonna will present “Geriatric Education: Considerations From Classroom Implementation to Practice Experience Integration.”
    Susanna Wu-Pong, director of the Pharmaceutical Sciences Graduate Programs, will lead “A Cross-Institutional Approach to Multidisciplinary Graduate Education and Personal Strengths Development for Team Science and Business Meeting.” She also is the founding chairwoman of the Graduate Education SIG (2011-12) and is a member of its Executive Committee.
    –Sicat will present “Shifting From Implementing to Assessing IPE: Creating a Culture of Assessment.”
  • July 15: During the final House of Delegates session, DiPiro will be recognized as president-elect of AACP. He will serve as president in 2016-17.

In addition to Donohoe and Sicat, VCU SOP alumni actively involved in AACP include Sarah Melton, currently of East Tennessee State University, who is chairwoman of the Substance Abuse Education and Assistance SIG.

Keynote speakers for the annual meeting include Jane McGonigal on “SuperBetter: Unlocking the Psychology of Games as a Pathway to  Better Health”; Debra Lappin discussing “From Hypothesis to Health: Understanding the Power of the Patient Partnership; and Freeman A. Hrabowski III on “Holding Fast to Dreams!”
