Once a VCU employee, always a VCU employee?

While this isn’t 100 percent correct, it is the case for many university faculty and staff. Each September for the past 41 years, VCU has honored university and medical center employees on their five-year anniversaries. This year, the 42nd annual service award celebration will pay tribute to more than 2,000 people who have worked at the university for anywhere from five to 50 years. A number of this year’s service awards will go to School of Pharmacy employees, whose total years of service equals 400! (See list that follows.)

With 35 years each, Betty Dobbie and Regina Scott share the honors this year as the School of Pharmacy’s longest-serving state employees. Like many, they have worked in more than one office or department over the years.

Dobbie began her VCU career in Records and Registration, where part of her job was to serve as graduation coordinator, and then went on to work at the university’s Department of Human Resources. In 1993, the School of Pharmacy hired Dobbie as assistant to C. Eugene White, then associate dean for admissions and student services. In 2004, she accepted her current position as experiential learning specialist with the School of Pharmacy’s Office of Experiential Education.

Scott worked for the state’s Department of Taxation for about a year before joining the VCU School of Medicine’s Dean’s Office, working in the area of finance and administration. Eleven years later, around 1990, she moved into the School of Pharmacy’s Dean’s Office, where she now serves as interim assistant dean for finance and administration.

A reception for faculty and staff with five to 20 years of service on this campus will be held 2:30-4 p.m. Sept. 23 at the Kontos Medical Sciences Building. A reception for faculty and staff with 25 to 50 years of service will begin at 6 p.m. Sept. 27 at the University Student Commons’ Commonwealth Ballrooms.

If you have questions about either event, contact Debbie Fitzgerald at (804) 828-1521 or [email protected]. Or click here.

To be eligible, employees must have worked the specified number of years by Aug. 1, 2013.
