Hit another vehicle by accident? Leave your information or call police.
The VCU Police Department has seen an increase in the number of reported hit-and-run crashes, especially in parking facilities. These minor crashes, often referred to as fender-benders, are unintentional and tend to happen at very low speeds when a driver is parking or leaving a parking space.
In the event you’re involved in such a crash, as either the driver or a passenger, you have a legal responsibility to leave your information on the vehicle you damaged or contact police.
If you do not, you’re a hit-and-run driver.
If someone saw you hit another vehicle and reported you to police, or VCU Police are able to identify you, you could be charged criminally for the crash. A guilty verdict in court could result in the loss of your drivers’ license and fines of up to $2,500.
Don’t take that chance! Do the legal thing, do the right thing and leave your information on the vehicle you hit, including:

Your name & phone number

Your license plate and drivers’ license numbers

Insurance company and policy number
If you don’t feel comfortable doing this, take down the other vehicle’s information and immediately contact VCU Police at (804) 828-1234. (You will need to tell us what vehicle you hit, the location, a description of the damage and your information.) If possible, stay on the scene to meet the officer. Either way, you’re in compliance with the law.
Remember, if you ever feel unsafe or uncomfortable exchanging your information with someone, call VCU Police. If someone hits your vehicle and they leave the scene before exchanging information, don’t follow them. Record the description of the driver, the car and the license plate number and call VCU Police.
