She entered the healthcare field working as a medical scribe in an emergency department near her hometown of Fredericksburg, VA, volunteered in a surgical trauma ICU, and then worked as a medical assistant at Virginia Women’s Center in Richmond. Her professional experiences, however, ended up having a surprising effect on her plans for the future. “Having worked in the healthcare field, working with patients every day, I witnessed the realities of the healthcare system,” she says. “Realizing that it’s not always set up for patients, providers, or professionals to succeed was disheartening.”

Finding herself at a crossroads, Vivian reflected upon her time as a research assistant during her undergraduate education at VCU. Working in the HOPE lab with Dr. Ruth Brown of the Virginia Institute for Psychiatric and Behavioral Genetics, Vivian contributed to research on access to mental health care for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This experience had given Vivian insight into the basics of research coordination, and she decided to learn more. “I stumbled upon a clinical research coordinator position at Massey [Comprehensive Cancer Center]’s clinical trials office, I was hired on as a gynecologic oncology research coordinator, and my role was so rewarding,” she recalls. Working for Massey for almost two and a half years, Vivian assisted with patient recruitment for trials, helped manage treatments for patients, and worked closely with project PIs and treating physicians. “That was what opened my eyes to a career in research,” says Vivian, “for me the most important thing is I want to do something that feels meaningful to me and that is helping people.”

I know that I want to help people in the moment, but I also acknowledge that there are larger systemic issues that cause problems to trickle down, which made me curious about public health. It’s important to me to be a lifelong learner, and I think it’s so important to stay curious and ask questions, and wonder why things are the way that they are, and try to think about potential solutions. Working towards an MPH, I feel like I will be a more well-rounded person, and hopefully it will give me a lens to see things in a different way.

-Vivian Hunter, CCRP

Following this career shift, Vivian decided to pursue further education in the form of an MPH from VCU’s School of Public Health. While working towards her degree, Vivian looked for clinical research coordinator positions, and found the OPT for Health Lab. In her role as senior clinical research coordinator, Vivian oversees all aspects of the three ongoing trials in the lab. “It’s all-encompassing. Everything comes and goes through me, which is amazing – and stressful,” she quips. “My days are spent managing day-to-day tasks related to trials. I help manage the study schedule, recruitment of participants, scheduling participant visits, quality data collection – all while making sure that participant experiences are centered and that we’re maintaining our relationships and continuing to build trust with the communities that we’re working with.”

Despite the busy and demanding schedule, Vivian is thriving as she enters her second year with the lab. “This position has given me the opportunity to really grow and understand what my passions are a little bit better,” she says. “Every day is different. I feel like this job has given me so many opportunities to learn and grow as a CRC and has opened my eyes to a completely different side of research that I was not as involved with or aware of.”

Where does Vivian see herself in the future? “I don’t know!” she laughs. “I see myself helping people – what does that look like? This award honors her achievements in leadership, scholarship, and mentorship in service to her department and the School of Public Health.

Dr. LaRose came to VCU’s School of Medicine as assistant professor in 2012 and has been a full member of Massey’s Cancer Prevention and Control program since 2014. She is a clinical psychologist with a specialization in behavioral and preventive medicine and dual training in pediatric and adult populations. Broadly, her program of research focuses on two areas: 1) understanding the interplay of behavioral, psychological, social, and environmental drivers of chronic disease risk, and 2) applying these findings to the development of novel and sustainable interventions to promote physical and psychological health among underserved populations. Dr. LaRose is an internationally recognized scholar with formal training and expertise in community-engaged research and the design and conduct of behavioral clinical trials. Her methodological expertise spans the translational continuum from early phase efficacy testing to implementation in community contexts; in addition, she is known for her work specific to recruitment and retention of underserved populations in behavioral trials, and the use of digital tools to enhance the reach and sustainability of behavioral interventions. Dr. LaRose’s program of research has been continuously funded since 2007—currently, she is PI or MPI on four NIH-funded studies and serves as MPI of the NCI-funded VA-ACCERT Center.

School of Public Health Dean Dr. Monica Swahn and Dr. Jessica LaRose

Dr. LaRose is also deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of scientists and practitioners—over the last decade alone she has mentored over 40 individuals, including graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and early career faculty—all but one of whom are women and more than half of whom are from underrepresented backgrounds. Her contributions to mentorship have been recognized by several awards, including Outstanding Mentor of the Year in the Massey Cancer Prevention and Control program in 2023 and the Outstanding Mentor Award for the Young Adult SIG of the International Society of Behavioral Nutrition & Physical Activity in 2024. Maghboeba Mosavel and Jessica LaRose, was part of a ongoing partnership in Petersburg focused on health and wellness built over the last decade. The goal of this study was to understand whether house chats (informal group meetings) led by Petersburg residents could work as a grassroots way to deliver an evidence-informed lifestyle intervention.

The Community Health Block Party was the culminating event of the WE Project 2.0, sharing insights on how support from social networks can help improve health, and spotlighting local wellness resources in the Petersburg area. The day featured an agenda of engaging activities including fitness and cooking demonstrations, games, dancing, Double Dutch, and even a stage play.

To learn more about the WE 2.0 Project and how you can make small steps to improve health and wellness in your community, visit the website at www.weprojectpetersburg.com.

A huge thank you to Chloé Jones, PhD who planned and coordinated this event!

And a round of applause for our partners who made the WE Community Health Block Party happen!
BLK VA Theater Alliance
40+ Double Dutch Club
Delicious Legacy
The Sports Backers Fitness Warriors
The Petersburg Wellness Consortium

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" data-src="https://blogs.vcu.edu/opt/wp-content/uploads/sites/1648/2026/06/831A0391-1-1024x683.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-69 lazyload" data-srcset="https://blogs.vcu.edu/opt/wp-content/uploads/sites/1648/2026/06/831A0391-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://blogs.vcu.edu/opt/wp-content/uploads/sites/1648/2026/06/831A0391-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https://blogs.vcu.edu/opt/wp-content/uploads/sites/1648/2026/06/831A0391-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https://blogs.vcu.edu/opt/wp-content/uploads/sites/1648/2026/06/831A0391-1-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://blogs.vcu.edu/opt/wp-content/uploads/sites/1648/2026/06/831A0391-1-2048x1365.jpg 2048w" data-sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" src="data:image/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==" style="--smush-placeholder-width: 1024px; This prompted us to explore data from our own previously-completed REACH Trial of behavioral weight loss for emerging adults age 18-25, which measured body fat percentage, waist circumference, and BMI. Our goal was to examine patterns of risk based on these three measurements in order to 1) identify areas of overlap/divergence and 2) characterize change over time.

At baseline, we found:

41.7% of participants were at risk for cardiometabolic disease based on BMI, body fat percentage, and waist circumference

32.7% were at risk for cardiometabolic disease based on BMI and waist circumference

1.8% were at risk for cardiometabolic disease based on BMI and body fat percentage

18.3% were at risk for cardiometabolic disease based on BMI alone

Of those who returned for their follow-up assessment after the 6-month intervention, the majority of participants (63.1%) remained in the same risk category they began in. However, 33.0% had an improved risk profile (ex., at risk based on BMI and waist circumference at baseline but at risk based on BMI only at follow-up) and 3.9% had a worsened risk profile (ex., at risk based on BMI and waist circumference at baseline but at risk based on BMI, waist circumference, and body fat percentage at follow-up). Among participants who lost a clinically significant amount of weight (>5% of their baseline weight), there was substantial variability with respect to magnitude of change in waist circumference and body fat percentage.

Our Takeaways:

In the context of behavioral interventions, BMI-based eligibility criteria may result in overlooking young adults who are at risk of cardiometabolic disease based on waist circumference and/or body fat percentage but have a BMI < 25kg/m2.

A focus on weight loss alone does not provide the full picture in terms of risk reduction, but there are no clinically significant change thresholds for waist circumference and/or body fat percentage. These need to be established—especially for young and racially/ethnically diverse populations.

Weight and BMI continue to be used even though they are imperfect because they are easily measurable, while things like waist circumference and body fat percentage require training and/or specialized equipment to measure. Additional work is needed to improve individuals’ access to these and other metrics that more accurately indicate risk for developing cardiometabolic disease.

OPT for Health director and associate director Drs. As part of this NIDDK-funded trial, investigators tested a grassroots, multilevel lifestyle intervention to reduce adiposity and promote cardiometabolic health for Petersburg residents.

The WE Celebration marked the first of several events recognizing both the conclusion of the WE Project and the beginning of our next phase—sharing what we’ve learned with the community. More than just sharing findings, the WE Celebration created space for participants to share their experiences, offer feedback, and celebrate the journey together—helping ensure that the voices of the community remain at the center of what comes next.

For more information about the WE Project, visit www.WEProjectPetersburg.com.

From left to right, WE team members Anu Owolabi, Dr. Maghboeba Mosavel, Dr. Chloé Jones, Dr. Jessica LaRose

Drs.
