Langston Center to offer three-part virtual program for annual Quality Forum focusing on implementation science
The Langston Center for Innovation in Quality and Safety, in partnership with VCU Health, will hold its annual Quality Forum in a three-part virtual series kicking off Aug. 19 with the first session. The forum, titled “The Science of Implementation – Human Behavior in an Age of Contagion,” will provide an understanding of principles from implementation science to clinical and organizational practice, and integrate strategies to increase the rapid uptake of evidence in stakeholder interactions. Participants with have the opportunity to learn how to apply implementation science to research and project management activities.
Attendees can register for any segment or the complete series at no cost. Nurses will receive CEUs and a certificate of attendance will be provided for non-nurses. The dates, topics and speakers are as follows:
- Session 1: Aug. 19, 10:00–11:30 a.m.
Topic: “The Science of Implementation – State of the Field” featuring keynote speaker, Dean Fixsen, Ph.D., Author, Theory Developer, Implementation Scientist, Active Implementation Research Network. - Session 2: Sept. 16, 10:00– 11:30 a.m.
Topic: “Field-Based Exemplars in Implementation Practice” featuring Dr. Dean Fixsen offering feedback and strategies on three implementation initiatives:- Jeanette Amery, DNP, AGACNP-BC, Nurse Practitioner, Division of Transplant Surgery at VCU Health System – Implementation Strategies of an Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Protocol in Kidney Transplantation;
- Alison J. Montpetit, Ph.D., RN, NPD-BC, Director of Nursing Research and Innovation with VCU Health System – Teletracking to Promote Cross Communication in COVID-19 Study Teams; and
- Tegwyn Brickhouse, D.D.S., Ph.D., Department of Dental Public Health and Policy, School of Dentistry, Virginia Commonwealth University – Dental Service Utilization in Medicaid Enrolled Pregnant Women.

Topic: “Social and Behavioral Science Influences in Adherence Behaviors of Healthcare Workers and the General Public: A Response to the COVID-19 Pandemic” featuring keynote speaker Jay Van Bavel, Ph.D., Associate Professor Psychology & Neural Science at New York University, an affiliate at the Stern School of Business in Management and Organizations, and Director of the Social Identity and Morality Lab.
From neurons to social networks, his research examines how collective concerns – group identities, moral values, and political beliefs – shape the mind and brain. In his most recent work, he has examined the human response to the COVID-19 pandemic, where he has been featured on CBS and other media forums. His research explains implementation science in a wide array of subject matter.
