VCU School of Nursing students help provide care at a free remote mobile clinic
A group of 10 VCU School of Nursing students and three faculty members recently participated in the Remote Area Medical Clinic in Harrisonburg, Virginia. RAM is a free mobile clinic that provides medical, dental and vision care to uninsured and impoverished patients. Harrisonburg is surrounded by rural counties with reduced access to care, particularly Page County.
A total of 601 patients of all nationalities received $304,882 worth of medical services. Students provided medical triage/assessment, worked with the medical and women’s health clinics, and worked with the dental clinic (in some instances, as dental assistants). Several bilingual students served as interpreters. Faculty who attended the event with the students included Mary Kay Goldschmidt, DNP, RN, APHN-BC, clinical assistant professor; Tamara Zurakowski, Ph.D., GNP-BC, clinical associate professor; and Juliane Milburn, Ph.D., RN, clinical assistant professor. This outreach is part of the School of Nursing’s effort to increase opportunities for students to experience community-based care.
