Jane Seymour, Ph.D., the leading expert in health policy research for palliative and end-of-life care in the U.K., visited the VCU School of Nursing last week to present a lecture on the topic “Looking Back, Looking Forward: Nursing and Palliative Care – A View from the UK.”  Seymour, the Sue Ryder Care Professor at the University of Nottingham in the U.K., is serving as a VCU Global Scholar for the summer.

The VCU Global Education Office offers the Global Visiting Scholar Awards program to support departments or schools in hosting an international scholar for a semester or academic year who will contribute to enriching the learning and scholarship of the unit. Seymour’s award, titled “What Can Be Done to Improve Care for People with Advanced Disease? A Comparison of U.S. and U.K. Policy and Practice,” is offered in partnership with the Division of Hematology, Oncology and Palliative Care at the VCU School of Medicine. She will spend her summer consulting with the clinical team and others in and outside of the VCU Medical Center, participating in the interdisciplinary rounds of the palliative care team and giving formal talks and presentations.

Seymour is scheduled to speak again at the VCU School of Nursing on Tuesday, July 8 as a guest lecturer of the Center for Biobehavioral Clinical Research. Her lecture, titled “Palliative Care Research: Capacity Building in Europe,” will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in room 1015.
