Panel Discussion on Sexuality, Gender Identity and Nursing Care on May 1
The VCU School of Nursing will host a panel discussion on sexuality, gender identity, and nursing care, titled “Let’s talk about sex,” on Thursday, May 1 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in Younger Auditorium.
Kathleen Bell, M.S.N., RNC-OB, WHNP-BC, clinical instructor in the Department of Family and Community Health Nursing, said the idea for this continuing education forum came from students in her NURS 335 class who were concerned about not being prepared to properly assess and interact with members of the LGBTQ community at hospitals.
In addition to Bell, the panel will include speakers from the Monroe Park and MCV campuses, including Candace Burton, Ph.D., RN, FNE, assistant professor in the Department of Family and Community Health Nursing; Daphne Rankin, Ph.D., associate vice provost for learning innovation and student success at the University College, and Tarynn Witten, Ph.D., M.S.W., FGSA, associate professor at the Center for the Study of Biological Complexity. Health care providers and community members will also be attending to discuss how sex, sexuality, gender identity, and preferences affect nursing care in the form of assessment techniques, communication style and ethical issues.
This event is free and open to all students, faculty and staff at the VCU School of Nursing and from the MCV campus.
