Dr. Alison Montpetit, a post-doctoral fellow at the VCU School of Nursing, was recently granted funding for her K99 application titled “Exhaled Biomarkers of Pulmonary Infection in the Critically Ill” by the National Institute of Nursing Research.
The K99 is part of the NIH Pathway to Independence Award designed to facilitate receiving an R01 award earlier in an investigator’s research career and can provide up to five years of support consisting of two phases.  Dr. Montpetit’s K99 award funds up to two years of mentored support for postdoctoral work. Following the mentored phase, Dr. Montpetit can request up to three years of support to transition, as an independent scientist, and if funded, can continue to work toward establishing her own independent research program and prepare an application for regular research grant support (R01).
Drs. Cindy Munro and Mary Jo Grap are excited about her work and the opportunity to serve as her mentors! This is the first K99 funding for the School of Nursing — so Dr. Montpetit is breaking new ground with us as well!!
