VCU Nursing Hosts Omani Nursing Delegation
The VCU School of Nursing hosted a delegation of health leaders from the Sultanate of Oman in October. The delegation visited VCU as a part of its trip to the United States to discuss possible collaborations in research and education.
“We have a long-range health vision that goes through 2050. Our plan includes human resource development of nurses to prepare nurses who are able to work in the future,” said Dr. Salem Al Touby, dean of the Oman Nursing Institute. “We’re looking at how we can have a global nurse whether educated in Oman or in the United States. The key is proper education and we know it should be done through collaboration with a well established university like VCU.”
Linda Haddad, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, associate professor in the Department of Family and Community Health Nursing, coordinated the visit, which came as a result of her consultation trip to the Oman Research Council in early 2013.
At VCU, the delegation met with leadership from the School of Nursing, as well as the School of Pharmacy and the Global Education Office. Dr. Al Touby concluded the visit by saying, “As we are impressed with the VCU School of Nursing, we are looking forward to signing a memorandum of understanding for the purpose of providing program and curriculum consultation soon.“
The Omani delegation’s U.S. trip also included visits to other prestigious universities, including Johns Hopkins University, Duke University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Drexel University, to discuss possible collaborations.
