In continuing our Moments of Pride series, the VCU School of Nursing is sharing additional alumni perspective on why they love nursing and more. Meet Peggie Powell (DNP’18/N), FNP-BC, a family nurse practitioner in the Outpatient Pain Management Clinic at VCU Health’s Community Memorial Hospital in South Hill, Virginia. Peggie was part of the first cohort to graduate from our school’s Doctor of Nursing Practice program.

Q. What do you enjoy most about being a nurse?  

A. The ability to help others and educate clients on safety measures to help reduce their risk for contracting COVID-19.

Q. How has your VCU School of Nursing education prepared you for your work as a nurse, particularly in situations such as the COVID-19 pandemic? 

A. I gained critical thinking skills to prioritize an alternative access to health care via telehealth.

Q. Can you share any words of encouragement or advice to current and future nurses? 

A. Take care of yourself so you can be there to take care of others.
