VCU School of Nursing faculty selected as fellows of American Academy of Nursing
Two full-time and one adjunct faculty member of the VCU School of Nursing will receive one of the most prestigious honors in nursing this fall when they are inducted into the American Academy of Nursing (AAN).
Nancy Jallo, Ph.D., RNC, FNP-BC, WHNP-BC, CNS; associate professor; Patricia Kinser, Ph.D., RN, WHNP-BC, FNAP (B.S.’03/N; M.S. ’04/N), associate professor; and Jeff Doucette, DNP, RN, FACHE, NEA-BC, CENP, LNHA, adjunct faculty member, are among 195 highly distinguished nurse leaders selected as 2018 fellows. They will be honored during the AAN’s annual policy conference, “Transforming Health, Driving Policy,” set for November 1-3, 2018 in Washington, D.C.
“I am delighted to recognize this outstanding class of nurse leaders as Academy fellows,” said Academy President Karen Cox, Ph.D., RN, FAAN. “Along with the rest of the fellowship, I look forward to celebrating their array of talents and impressive accomplishments at our policy conference, and then working with them to apply our collective knowledge to transforming health policy.”
The Academy fellows, with the addition of this newest class, represent all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and 29 countries. The Academy is currently comprised of more than 2,500 nurse leaders in education, management, practice, policy, and research. Fellow selection criteria include evidence of significant contributions to nursing and health care, and sponsorship by two current Academy fellows. New fellows will be eligible to use the credentials FAAN (Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing) after their induction.
“Our faculty demonstrate each day that they’re committed to advancing our profession,” said Jean Giddens, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, dean of the VCU School of Nursing. “The fellow distinction validates that they’re among the top nurses nationwide making a real impact.”
In addition to demonstrating excellence in teaching Jallo, who maintains a practice as a board-certified clinical nurse specialist and as a family and women’s health nurse practitioner, conducts biobehavioral research focused on developing and testing innovative, easy to implement interventions to improve maternal and infant health outcomes. She has published findings in various industry journals and has presented at conferences nationwide. A member of several nursing associations, Jallo volunteers as a member of the Board of Directors for the Virginia Chapter of the March of Dimes and serves as chair of the Board of Directors of Physicians for Peace. She is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including her current appointment as a VCU L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs Office of Public Policy Outreach Translational Research Fellow.
Along with her accomplishments in teaching, Kinser conducts biobehavioral research largely focused on enhancing wellness in women across the lifespan, with specific foci on biobehavioral mechanisms of depression and on the effects of complementary health interventions. She has published findings in various industry journals and has presented at conferences nationwide and internationally. Kinser maintains a practice as a board-certified women’s health nurse practitioner at Health Brigade, a free clinic in Richmond, Virginia, and serves on the Board of the Southern Nursing Research Society as the director of awards. She is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, the most recent being her selection as a 2017-2018 fellow of the Society of Behavioral Medicine Leadership Institute and her appointment by Gov. Ralph Northam to represent the voice of nursing on the Virginia State Board of Health from 2017-2020.
Doucette, an adjunct faculty member in the Nursing and Administration Leadership concentration of the school’s master’s degree program, is vice president of the Magnet Recognition Program and Pathway to Excellence at the American Nurses Credentialing Center. He formerly served as regional vice president of clinical services and chief nursing officer for Bon Secours Hampton Roads Health System in Hampton Roads, Virginia. A Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse fellow and a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives, Doucette often speaks nationwide on topics of interest to nursing leaders.
The three new fellows will join several current VCU nursing faculty members who have already been recognized as AAN fellows. In addition to Dean Jean Giddens, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, other fellows include Debra Barksdale, Ph.D., FNP-BC, CNE, FAANP, FAAN; professor and associate dean of academic affairs; Deborah McGuire, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, professor and associate dean for research, scholarship and innovation; Beth Rodgers, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, professor and chair of the Department of Adult Health and Nursing Systems; and Victoria Menzies, Ph.D., RN, PMHCNS-BC, FAAN, associate professor.
