Langston Quality Scholars team to present at a National Academy of Medicine Workshop
The Langston Center for Quality, Safety and Innovation recently graduated its first cohort of Langston Quality Scholars. One of the teams has been invited to present Thursday, April 6 at the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) workshop “Exploring a Business Case for High-Value Continuing Professional Development (CPD).”
Amy Dean, RN, nurse clinician at VCU Health, and Kristin Miller, M.D., assistant professor with the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine at VCU School of Medicine, will present their work, “Collaboration and Coordination in the MRICU — A Multidisciplinary Approach to Implementation of Daily Review of Sedation Strategy, Extubation Potential and Mobility Plan,” and will participate in a follow-up panel discussion.
Dean and Miller’s quality improvement project focused on interdisciplinary huddles to improve plans for sedation, mobility and ventilation in intensive care unit patients. The team found that huddle-in-place practices led to decreased length of stay in the intensive care unit and overall hospital stay, which could possibly save more than $1 million per year.
The Langston Quality Scholars Program offers teams of clinicians training in leadership and performance improvement while solving an actual quality and safety problem they have identified in their clinical setting.
