Jean Giddens, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, dean of the VCU School of Nursing, received the 2016 Leadership Excellence Award in the Nursing School Dean category at the Virginia Nurses Foundation annual gala on Saturday. The award recognizes nurse leaders serving in an educational administrative capacity that demonstrate advocacy, vision and collaboration to improve patient care and the nursing workplace.

Giddens was nominated by Debra Barksdale, Ph.D., FNP-BC, CNE, FAANP, FAAN, associate dean of academic affairs, who described her as “a visionary for undergraduate education to improve patient care and the nursing workforce. She is a strong advocate for baccalaureate education to enhance the workforce but recognizes that the profession and state still has strong stakeholders in associate degree nursing programs.”

Accelerated B.S. student Elizabeth “Cole” McConnell was also recognized at the gala. She received the Virginia Nurses Foundation Owens & Minor Scholarship, which is presented to three junior and/or senior nursing students currently completing requirements for a baccalaureate degree with a major in nursing at a state-approved and nationally-accredited school of nursing.
