The VCU School of Nursing celebrated its new Doctor of Nursing Practice Program (DNP) on Tuesday with a lecture, titled “DNP Implementation: Lessons Learned,” presented by Debra Barksdale, Ph.D., FNP-BC, ANP-BC, CNE, FAANP, FAAN, professor and director of the DNP program at the University of North Carolina School Of Nursing. Faculty, staff and nurses from VCU Medical Center were on hand to hear Barksdale share her experience and tips on the implementation of a Doctor of Nursing Practice Program. She also suggested ways for faculty to engage in and support the new program. The lecture was followed by a reception in the Student Lounge.

The DNP, the highest academic degree in nursing with a focus on clinical practice, prepares nurses to translate research into evidence-based practice and lead teams of health care professionals toward improving patient outcomes. VCU’s DNP classes are scheduled to begin in the fall semester.
