VCU School of Nursing students toughed out three days of rain and cool weather to participate in the Remote Area Medical (RAM) event held in Wise County, Virginia. Genevieve Beaird, RN (B.S. ’09/N, M.S/ ’11/N), assistant director of the Clinical Learning Center, volunteered to facilitate the trip in collaboration with Evan Sisson, Pharm.D., associate professor in the Department of Pharmacotherapy and Outcome Studies. Students participated in health screenings, smoking cessation education, diabetes education, medicine reconciliation and assisted with dental procedures.

The student-led initiative also provided an opportunity for interdisciplinary collaboration as the participants worked with VCU School of Pharmacy students and countless other volunteers helping this under-served population. The RAM-Wise event, in its 15th year of existence, is considered the largest free medical outreach event in the country. More than 3,000 patients were seen and treated with a variety of services including dental, medical and vision.
