Candace Johnson, Ph.D., RN (B.S. ’07/N; M.P.H. ’07), assistant professor in the Department of Family and Community Health Nursing, has been selected to participate in a new VCU initiative designed to increase external funding opportunities for underrepresented ethnic minority faculty.  The VCU Research and External Funding (REF) Academy, launched by VCU’s Division for Inclusive Excellence, accepted a select cohort of faculty to provide year-long training and support. Faculty participating in the REF Academy will receive specialized training in proposal development, build an enhanced grant writing skill set and connect with a network of experts that they can access throughout their careers.

The 2014-2015 REF Academy is aligned with VCU’s Quest for Distinction Theme I (to “attract, retain and support a nationally competitive and diverse faculty,”) and Theme II (to “increase universitywide productivity in high-impact research, scholarship and creative expression.”) By increasing the external funding portfolio among underrepresented ethnic minority faculty, VCU enhances its support for research productivity, diversity and professional development of junior faculty.
