Senior students from the traditional undergraduate nursing program presented their service-learning posters on Tuesday, April 29 in the Student Lounge. The posters were created to showcase the students’ service-learning projects that function as their final clinical experience for the Community Health Nursing (NURS 416) course. Community Health Nursing is the only service-learning course at the School of Nursing and students use this experience to work with local community members to identify and address health problems.

“Poster presentations are some of the first scholastic events nursing graduates will do as a professionals,” said Fay Parpart, RN, M.S., ANP-BC, AACRN, clinical assistant professor in the Department of Family and Community Health Nursing. “We provide food and encourage students to dress professional and critique their colleagues’ posters so the event mirrors the actual poster presentations students will see in the field when they graduate.”

Student projects included the following:

  • dental-focused education workshop at the Sacred Heart Center
  • a Hoops for Health & Healthy Living Festival for the Church Hill community
  • a teen dating violence prevention presentation for Mosby Court teenagers
  • a sexual health information session for the adolescent population in the Hillside Court community
  • a mental health and wellness lesson for Dominion Place residents
  • a workshop in identifying children experiencing grief in Henrico County Public Schools
