VCU School of Nursing alumna, Stephanie Ferguson, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, (M.S. ’87/N), international health care consultant, was recently selected as one of just 18 nurse leaders to participate in Sigma Theta Tau International’s (STTI) first Global Advisory Panel on the Future of Nursing (GAPFON). GAPFON was created to establish a global voice and vision for the future of nursing that will advance global health.

The initial GAPFON meeting took place in Basel, Switzerland from March 27 to March 29 and the panel identified issues such as the need for reform, advocacy, and innovations in leadership, policy, practice, education, and work environments. GAPFON will hold a series of regional meetings that will include attendance from leaders, key stakeholder groups, and representatives from multiple sectors around the globe to obtain knowledge and social, economic, cultural, and political insight related to issues determined at this recent inaugural meeting. Data from these meetings will be used to create a basis for an action plan including policy implications.

Ferguson has been involved in global health initiatives for many years. She has served as a consultant for the World Health Organization and has been the director of the International Council of Nurses’ Leadership for Change Programme and facilitator of the Global Nursing Leadership Institute. A former adjunct faculty member and past director of the Community Nursing Organization at the VCU School of Nursing, Ferguson was recognized in 2013 as one of VCU Nursing’s “120 Visionary Leaders.”
