Patricia Kinser, Candace Burton and Victoria Menzies Present at Women’s Health Research Day, Menzies Wins Poster Award
Patricia Kinser, Ph.D., RN, WHNP-BC, Candace Burton, Ph.D., RN, FNE, both assistant professors in the Department of Family and Community Health Nursing, and Victoria Menzies, Ph.D., RN, PMHCNS-BC, assistant professor in the Department of Adult Health and Nursing Systems, presented posters at VCU’s 9th Annual Women’s Health Research Day.
Dr. Menzies won the Building Interdisciplinary Bridges in Women’s Health Research Award for her poster, titled “Unique Cytokine Signature in the Serum of Women with Fibromyalgia.” The award is presented to the poster that best demonstrates interdisciplinary investigator collaboration in women’s health. VCU nursing students also presented a poster on their work as birth companions in the NURS 416 Community Health Clinical.

In addition to recently presenting at the Women’s Health Research Day, Dr. Burton presented at the Academy on Violence (AVA) and Abuse Biennial Scientific Assembly in Minneapolis, MN held April 17-20. As a member of the Faculty Development Subcommittee of AVA, she was part of the faculty for a pre-conference workshop titled “Developing Research on Violence: Faculty Development Course.” This workshop is designed to develop a scholarly focus around violence and abuse by providing information to faculty new to this area of science. The pre-conference addressed issues specific to abuse research including: types of scholarly research, levels of evidence, navigating the IRB process, funding and academic productivity. The workshop serves as the beginning of a mentoring relationship with AVA’s national experts in the field of violence and abuse research. She also presented her own original research on young adult women’s past experiences of dating abuse in a presentation titled “‘It was very scary’: Fear in young women’s accounts of adolescent dating abuse.”
