This past Friday as a part of Alumni Reunion Weekend, the VCU School of Nursing held its Legacy Lectureship in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing. School of Nursing Alumna Barbara J. Limandri, Ph.D., APRN, BC (N ’70), lectured on the topic “Every Nurse is a Psychiatric Nurse.”  Limandri is a professor at Linfield College’s Good Samaritan School of Nursing in Portland, Or.

About 70 students and faculty filled Younger Auditorium to hear Limandri speak about nurses treating the whole patient.

“The first step is that the patient is aware of his or her mental illness,” Limandri said.  She stressed that mental illness must be treated before physical illness.

Limandri also said patients “are not their illness” and went on to talk about the dangers of the stigma of mental illness and of leaving mental illness untreated.

The Legacy Lectureship was established to honor the outstanding careers and accomplishments of four former VCU School of Nursing faculty: Dr. Lorna Mill Barrell, Dr. Katherine Bobbitt, Dr. Gloria Francis, and Dr. Barbara Munjas.
