Jo Robins Presents Workshop on Alternative Medicine
Jo Robins, Ph.D., RN, ANP-BC, AHN-C, CHTP, assistant professor in the Department of Family and Community Health Nursing, presented a three-hour workshop, titled “Caring for Ourselves,” at the Virginia Association of Free Clinics 2012 Conference on Transformational Change held recently at the Homestead in Hot Springs, Va. Part 1 of the workshop provided an overview of complementary and alternative medicine based on the NIH National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine framework, as well as biobehavioral research on the short and long term effects of excess stress. Part 2 was focused on strategies for shifting perception of stress in order to improve health, well-being and quality of life, and included experiential exercises in meditative breathing, laughter, and tai chi.
