VCU Nursing Students Participate in Remote Area Medical Volunteer Corps Clinic in Wise, Virginia
Students from the Accelerated Class of Nursing, December 2012 recently traveled to the Wise County fairgrounds to join thousands of volunteers who participated in the Remote Area Medical Volunteer Corps Clinic. The RAM Volunteer Corps is a non-profit, volunteer group dedicated to providing free health care, dental care, veterinary services, and technical/educational assistance to people in remote areas of the United States and the world.
This was the first time students from the School of Nursing participated in RAM, which is one of the largest, free medical outreach events and clinics held annually within the United States.
Students from the schools of Dentistry, Pharmacy and Medicine also participated.
Nursing students Stacy Hosenfeld, Michael Duckwall, Katie Houston, Meghan Donohue Walsh, and Laura Duke, along with adjunct faculty member Genevieve Downs, M.S.N., RN, were part of the nursing team stationed in the triage area, taking vital signs, blood sugar readings and health histories to prepare patients to get their free dental, medical and vision services. Approximately 2,000 patients received care over the course of the event.
Student medical outreach chair Stacy Hosenfeld and co-chair Michael Duckwall, along with faculty sponsor Susan Lindner, M.S.N., RNC, hope to continue the medical outreach trips to include more RAM clinics and trips within the local community.
