VCU School of Nursing (SON) students, faculty and staff distributed 100 backpacks filled with school supplies during the annual Mosby Community Day on Sept.10. The School of Nursing also provided free blood pressure screenings, face painting activities, homework tips for parents, and information on the Mosby Resource Center.
A collaborative effort between SON, the Richmond Health District, the Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority and the Mosby Tenant Council, the Mosby Resource Center offers services to promote health and wellness, including screenings, checkups and nutrition information. The center is the newest of several located in the RRHA communities of Creighton, Fairfield and Whitcomb.
Since Mosby is in close proximitly to VCU, the School of Nursing participated in the community day event to donate school supplies and promote the health and wellness services available at the Mosby Resource Center.
“We are pleased to do our part to ensure the health and well-being of the community,” Fay Parpart, RN, VCU School of Nursing assistant professor and nurse practitioner at the resource center, told community day attendees.
Parpart was one of several guests, including Councilwoman Cynthia Newbille of Richmond’s 7th District, who shared remarks at the event. Councilwoman Newbille commended event organizers for providing the community with a fun, educational event. She also visited the School of Nursing’s table and helped to distribute several backpacks to RRHA youth.
Paypart encouraged residents to stop by the resource center to learn about the convenient health care available right in their community. VCU nursing students are directly involved in providing that health care – they perform clinical services at Mosby and the other RRHA resource centers as part of their required course work.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn while giving back to the community,” she said.
