It operates in more than 140 countries, and more than 2,000 grants are awarded annually to graduating college seniors, graduate students and recent alums. Fulbright scholars receive funding to teach English abroad, conduct research, pursue creative projects or study for a graduate degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Here are the five VCU Fulbright recipients, and their travel destinations, for the 2026-27 academic year:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe achievements of these two exceptional students and two distinguished alumni underscore VCU\u2019s ever-growing footprint on the global stage,\u201d said Arturo Saavedra<\/a>, M.D., Ph.D., executive vice president and provost. \u201cBy taking their diverse talents from Richmond to Jamaica, Kazakhstan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Brazil, these four Rams embody our institution\u2019s commitment to fostering cross-cultural understanding and tackling world challenges. Since the founding in 2006 of the VCU National Scholarship Office<\/a>, which assists students in applying for national and international scholarships, more than 100 students and alums have received Fulbright scholarships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Each Fulbright candidate for the 2026-27 cycle applied with the support and encouragement of the NSO. He is VCU\u2019s 19th Goldwater Scholar in the past 20 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Established by Congress in 1986 and conferring scholarships since 1989, the Goldwater program<\/a> encourages students to pursue research careers in mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering. Paradkar is among 454 scholars selected for the 2026-27 academic year from nearly 1,500 STEM students, who were nominated by more than 450 academic institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cReceiving the Goldwater Scholarship is incredibly meaningful \u2014 it feels like a true recognition of the time and dedication I\u2019ve invested in research, as well as the mentorship and support that have shaped my journey,\u201d Paradkar said. \u201cThe application process also gave me the opportunity to reflect on my long-term goals, solidifying my aspiration to become an academic physician-scientist.
