This is a brief sample of recently acquired materials by Special Collections and Archives for two of its best- known collections. These items are representative of a focus on adding more diverse voices and themes to the research collection. They were added in the 2023-24 fiscal year. 

Additions to the Book Arts Collection

Special Collections and Archives acquired a number of book arts/zine/comics adjacent works from small publishers that offer works by diverse creators. These sources included: Sojourner for Justice Press, Black Mass Publishing, and Maamoul Press.

Additions to the Comic Arts Collection 

  • Dyke Shorts, Mary Wings’ autobiographical comic about life of an American lesbian in 1970s California 
  • Tales from the Closet #1, a rare 1987 LGBT-themed book 
  • Hothead Paisan #1, an alternative comic written and drawn by Diane DiMassa, published 1991–1998 
  • Abortion Eve, a 1973 comic book significant for its frank portrayal of women dealing with unwanted pregnancies  
  • A selection of comics featuring Dixie Dugan, a comic strip and movie heroine who was an independent working woman 
  • Jungle Action, a series published by Marvel Comics and its 1950s precursor Atlas Comics, containing the debut of the Black Panther, the first Black superhero in mainstream comics 
  • Golden Legacy comics, a classic collection of inspirational volumes, each a biographical account of achievements of Black men and women.

“Mare Nostrum” is a bilingual book in English and Arabic that highlights the Mediterranean Immigration Crisis; People from Sub-Saharan Africa, the middle and far East come to North Africa to cross the Mediterranean using primitive boats and with the help of traffickers of immigrants. According to the missing migrant project, more than 23600 missing migrants have been recorded in the Mediterranean since 2014. Cloth-covered box. Leather wrapping connected to brass cut pieces. Silk-screened book cloth, inkjet printed text, handmade paper, linen thread, book board, museum board, laser-cut Canson paper, Coptic binding, and five brass boats in a compartment.
