VCU Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) Blog

The VCU HRPP is dedicated to facilitating ethically and scientifically sound research through robust review of research projects and through effective education and outreach to the VCU research community.

The Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) is very pleased to welcome Dr. Sanjur (Sandy) Brooks as the new Director of the HRPP.  

Dr. Brooks has worked extensively with IRBs, human subjects protection policy, and clinical research. She comes to VCU from the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, Office of Compliance and Business Integrity, where she was Director of National Compliance Policy. 

Previously, Dr. Brooks was the Research Ethics and Compliance Officer with the Air Force Medical Readiness Agency, Surgeon General Executive—Compliance Office (SGE-C), and she has held the positions of Director of Research Programs and Clinical Ethics Advisor for the Department of Research Programs at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. At Walter Reed, she was responsible for management and oversight of the largest human subjects’ research portfolio for the Department of Defense.

Dr. Brooks has also worked with the Department of Health and Human Services, the Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP), Division of Policy and Assurances. At OHRP, she contributed to the development and release of the Notice of Proposed Rule Making for Title 45 CFR 46, also known as the “Common Rule”, reviewed and certified prisoner research certification requests and approved Institutional Review Board registration applications; while assisting research institutions with their questions and concerns on policy and assurance issues.
