Summer Student Researchers – Update
It’s officially that time of year again—the summer brings a shift in focus to research experiences for many students at VCU. Whether they’re working in labs, conducting surveys and interviews, or analyzing data from health records, students benefit from these hands-on learning experiences.
Professors and PIs who are bringing students in on a research project that involves human subjects may wonder when and how to add students to their protocols in the VCU IRB system (VIRBS). Please check the decision trees below to figure out when student researchers and other personnel need to be added to the study record. In all cases, the PI retains full responsibility for ensuring that study personnel rosters are maintained according to regulatory and/or institutional policy requirements, and for maintaining delegation of authority logs and training logs.
When do I need to add a summer student researcher to my VIRBS record?
The options for student researchers are:
- “Lead Student/Trainee Investigator (leading their own project)” OR
- “Trainee/Student (working on a project).”

How do I add a Lead Student/Trainee Investigator (LSTI) to a study?
For a new study, include in the “local study team members” list.
For an active study, submit a MOD and check the following in the “Modification Scope”:
- “Study team and research location information.”
In both cases, the following must be addressed and/or uploaded to the smart form:
- LSTI current CV, resume, or biosketch;
- LSTI current CITI training certification: https://research.vcu.edu/training/citi-training/;
- LSTI FIR Report: https://airs.research.vcu.edu/.
Which other study personnel do I need to add to my VIRBS protocol record?

As always, the HRPP is happy to answer any questions during office hours: virtual on Mondays from 3-5; on the MCV campus on Tuesdays from 11-1; and on the Monroe Park campus on Thursdays from 11-1. You can also reach a member of the HRPP team any time via email ([email protected]). We look forward to helping promote another wonderful summer of research at VCU!
