Here’s why:

Shorter days. Less daylight can throw off your circadian rhythm, also known as your body’s internal clock.

Time change. When clocks “fall back” in autumn, it can confuse your sleep schedule for days or weeks.

Less sunlight. Sunlight helps your brain make serotonin, a chemical that supports good mood and healthy sleep. Less sun can mean less of this helpful chemical.

Colder temperatures. Chilly bedrooms can make it harder to fall asleep, or they can wake you up in the middle of the night.

7 tips for better sleep this season

Get sunlight in the morning. Step outside or sit near a window early in the day. This helps reset your body clock and supports your mood.

Keep a steady bedtime. Going to sleep and waking up at the same time each day—even on weekends—trains your body to rest better.

Warm up your room the smart way. Keep your bedroom cool but not cold, around 65 degrees. Use warm blankets instead of cranking up the heat, which can dry out the air.

Watch your evening screen time. Phones and TVs give off blue light that can trick your brain into staying awake. Try turning off screens an hour before bed.

Move your body during the day. Even a short walk can help you fall asleep faster at night and sleep more deeply.

Mind what you eat and drink. Heavy meals, alcohol and caffeine late in the day can disturb sleep. Try light snacks like a piece of fruit or some crackers if you’re hungry before bed.

Watch out for chronic conditions. Colder months can worsen symptoms of arthritis, asthma or seasonal depression, all of which can disrupt sleep. Talk to your doctor if pain or mood changes keep you up.

Key takeaway

Cold, dark days can make good sleep harder to find—but small habits like morning light, a steady schedule and mindful eating can help you rest better all season long.

No matter the time of year, keep your bedroom dark and quiet. Save your bed for sleeping, not scrolling or working. Try to relax before bed with reading or gentle stretching. And if you’re tossing and turning, get up and do something calm instead of lying there stressed.

FAQs

Why do I feel sleepier in the winter?

Less sunlight can lower serotonin and shift your body clock, making you feel more tired.

Does the time change really affect sleep?

Less sunlight can lower serotonin and shift your body clock, making you feel more tired.

Can food affect my sleep?

Yes. We get stuck in a loop of self-blame, feeling depressed or angry, which can lead to health issues or harmful relationship patterns over time. It’s time to break the loop! Instead of the blame game, try radical acceptance.

What is radical acceptance?

Radical acceptance is a skill we can develop to better manage emotions during distressing times. Essentially, you learn to accept a situation for exactly what it is, sit in your feelings of discomfort and redirect your energy to more productive feelings and actions.

It sounds simple but can take practice to master. You can practice it yourself over time, or you can work with a doctor or therapist to help you master the skill.

Radical acceptance does not mean you avoid or push emotions aside. It means acknowledging your emotions and feeling them wholly in your mind, body and soul, without judgement.

Practicing radical acceptance

Let’s say you planned a large outdoor event and as the day approaches, you see there’s rain in the forecast. You are probably feeling frustrated, disappointed, or even hopeless and angry. To practice radical acceptance, you’d follow these simple steps.

Step 1: Look at the facts. Remind yourself that the situation simply is what it is, and there is a logical reason for it. It is going to rain on the day of my event. Weather is unpredictable. I knew this was a possibility.

Step 2: Avoid judgement. Try not to think in terms of good or bad, should or shouldn’t. Imagine what it would sound and feel like to truly accept your reality for what it is. It’s going to rain. I will have to come up with a solution for my event. Then start to search for solutions as if you’ve already accepted your reality.

Step 3: Be open to your emotions. Acknowledge your natural feelings and allow yourself to feel them as they come up. I’m so upset that the weather isn’t cooperating. I wanted it to be a beautiful event and now it’s ruined. I’m disappointed. How does this make you feel emotionally and physically? I feel tense, my jaw is clenched, I feel anxious.

Step 4: Practice acceptance. Process those feelings and then reframe your mindset to productive thoughts.1 I’m disappointed…but instead of sulking about it, I can call a nearby venue to see if they have space for our event. If that doesn’t work, I can reschedule my event and it will be OK.

Step 5: Keep practicing! Like all useful skills, radical acceptance requires repetition to successfully use when negative feelings arise.2

It is important to note that radical acceptance can be harmful in certain situations. If you’re experiencing abuse, harassment or feel stuck in a dangerous relationship or environment, seek help from appropriate mental health professionals or authorities. You do not need to accept abusive or dangerous situations for what they are.

Over time, the radical acceptance technique can be a great tool in your mental health toolbox.

Check out the many mental health resources available to VCU employees on RamStrong.

“Why does this always happen to me?” “Ugh. Attach your workouts to other activities you do daily. For example, if you eat lunch at the same time every day, try working out just before lunch. You can schedule around meals, breaks in the day or even something as routine as checking the mail. This can help you build a doable workout habit that already fits into your daily tasks.

Do outdoor workouts earlier in the day. With the sun setting earlier each day, it gets harder to do outdoor evening workouts. Shift those workouts to lunchtime or turn them into morning workouts.

Bring some workouts indoors. If you’d rather keep your outdoor workouts at the same time, consider bringing them indoors. If you have a treadmill, for example, use it to walk indoors instead of outside in the cold or at night. Consider replacing outdoor workouts that require outdoor space or equipment with indoor workouts that target the same muscle groups. Here are more weatherproof indoor workout ideas.

Try short workout snacks instead of extended workout sessions. Five- to 15-minute exercise snacks add up throughout the day. To your body, three separate workout sessions of 10 minutes each are the same as one 30-minute session. Learn more about how to make the best of exercise snacks here.

When working out outdoors, safety first! If you’re going to exercise outdoors after dark, wear reflective gear so that motorists can see you. If it’s cold, take appropriate precautions to stay warm. Layer up! Think about wearing gloves or protective face gear when it gets very cold. Don’t work out in severe weather or icy conditions.

3 tips to set yourself up for success

Now that you have the ingredients for a fantastic fall reset, let’s make it easier to follow. Try these three tips to keep you motivated and set you up for success.

Set a weekly minimum. Life doesn’t always happen on schedule. Set a weekly minimum target for workout minutes or workout sessions. If it’s too hard to stick to your schedule, adjust your workout sessions so that you hit your minimum. For example, if you know your schedule is going to change one week, set a goal for 20 minutes a day, or three workouts this week.

Track streaks instead of perfection. Starting a new habit is challenging. It’s important to start positive and celebrate even the small wins. If you fall off track, it’s OK. Just get back on track and celebrate—give yourself credit when you keep it up for a while.

Adjust your routine to make it work for you. If your first attempt at a new fitness routine doesn’t feel quite right, don’t give up! Make changes until it feels just right for you. Your fitness journey is unique to you. Make adjustments as the days grow shorter and your schedule changes.

As fall routines shift, it’s normal for your workout schedule to need a reset too. The good news is that the best fitness routine is one that fits your life. Use these tips and tools to stay motivated and active through the changing seasons.

Main takeaway

A fall fitness reset does not require a perfect schedule. Plan workouts around your daily routine. Adapt to shorter days and colder weather. Set flexible goals to keep moving. Small, consistent changes can help you build a routine that works throughout the season.

Key points

Fit workouts around daily tasks to make exercise easier to maintain.

Move workouts earlier or indoors as daylight and temperatures change.

Set flexible weekly goals, track progress and adjust your routine as needed.

Changing seasons often call for changing up your routine.
