Summary

Conduct behavioral studies in lab animals, including animal handling, administration of experimental drugs, and both direct and automated behavioral observations; collection, organization and preliminary analysis of data. Oversee record keeping for all scheduled drugs used in the laboratory. Assume primary responsibility for oversight of care and enrichment for laboratory animals. Function as liaison between lab and VCU administrative entities, including IACUC, OEHS, and DAR. Maintain all documentation necessary for compliance with their guidelines and regulations. Operate and maintain research equipment; maintain supplies and research environment. Oversee in-processing and training of new staff members. Ensure each has taken and passed all required animal-related courses and is properly registered with the Division of Animal Resources.


Required Education and Experience

Must have prior experience (as employee or student) working in a research laboratory. Ability to work in a diverse environment is required.

Preferred Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in psychobiology, neuroscience, experimental psychology, biology or a related discipline or extensive related training/work experience. Preference will be assigned to individuals with (a) prior paid work experience in a setting that requires organization and time management skills, (b) experience working with laboratory mice and/or rats, and (c) coursework and/or research experience in psychopharmacology.  Other desired attributes include reliability, excellent organizational skills, excellent communication skills, and ability to work independently or as part of a research team.
