Galen Goldscheitter

By Jena Salem

Galen Goldscheitter, an M.D. Ph.D. student from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, has been awarded a fellowship position by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

This organization conducts and supports medical research and research training to spread information based on several kinds of diseases, such as diabetes and various nutritional disorders. Their primary goal is to improve the lives of people with these chronic conditions.

The study section that reviewed Goldscheitter’s application underscored his budding potential as an aspiring physician-scientist, as well as the strength of their mentoring committee and the diligence of his previous work.

Goldscheitter intends to become an engineer specializing in solid-state material development and renewable energy systems before changing his trajectory to pharmaceutical engineering. Later down the line, Goldscheitter pivoted again to pursue clinical medicine and biomedical research because he wanted to work in both settings of care delivery and discovery. His nonlinear educational track equipped him with a unique and vast skillset and insights he can employ to develop improvements in clinical medicine.

Goldscheitter advises others in research-based fields to seek out those who share mutual interests and invest in your success.

“The best scientists are those who find and maintain a community of people who challenge them to do better and support them in that process. Persistence pays.” said Goldscheitter.

Goldscheitter attributes his success to his community of peers and mentors at the college and beyond. He insists that their encouragement and guidance have greatly influenced his chosen approach.
