After all, women represent 60% of VCU’s student body and more than half of its alumni base, according to university data.

Four years later, it’s clear that the brunch is finding, and serving, its audience. That first year, the event sold out in a week, and drew 75 attendees. This year, it drew 250 people, with 50 more on the waitlist — a more than 200% increase.

“When we thought of this event, it was initially a way to recognize and celebrate women during Women’s History Month,” says Latisha Smart, senior director of alumni career and personal development. “It has since been a way to not only gather as a community our VCU alumnae, but also pour back into our VCU alumna-owned businesses.”

Each year’s event features a keynote speaker and showcases VCU alumna-owned businesses, often aligned with the event’s theme. This year’s was “In Full Bloom: Honoring the Women Who Inspire Us.” There are activities, vendors and an offering Smart says is always popular: professional headshots from an alumna-owned business.

“It shows the interest, it shows the pull that women have that want to come together in community,” Smart says. “It’s always just been our goal to get VCU women and supporters in the room with one another.”

While the brunch uplifts women, everyone is welcome, Smart says.

“It originally started with VCU alumnae but it has expanded to the VCU community,” she says. So we get a ton of faculty and staff, we get alumnae of course, we get friends of the university, donors, parents and families of VCU students. So it’s exciting to see how it has expanded and has just been this domino effect across this group of people who are excited each year for this to come back.”

Maya Rogers Gibson (B.S.’19, M.P.A.’23) attended the first brunch in 2023 with a sorority sister. She knew right away it was something she’d do again.

“Even though it was networking, it was more of that low maintenance type of networking,” says Gibson, who is now employed as financial services manager in VCU’s Office of the Provost and served as president of the VCU Staff Senate from 2024-2026. “It was really just a great experience. … It was such an uplifting experience and such a positive environment, tied to uplifting women and empowering women. I knew for sure I was going to continue to go to these events.”

This year’s brunch featured VCU alum Jay Ell Alexander (M.S.’10), owner and CEO of Black Girls RUN! a national running organization, as the guest speaker. In a fireside-chat-style conversation with Tomika Ferguson, Ph.D., associate dean of student affairs and community engagement in the VCU School of Education, Alexander spoke about her story and the people who helped her along the way.

Tomika Ferguson, Ph.D. (left), and Jay Ell Alexander (M.S.’10)

“She was vulnerable, authentic, funny and deeply engaging, and people really responded to that,” says Amy Gray Beck, Ph.D. (Ph.D.’19), executive director of affinity programs for the VCU Office of Development and Alumni Relations. “The essence of the brunch is hard to explain if you haven’t experienced it yourself. There’s so much joy, and it feels like no one is a stranger. Our speakers have been honest and open, and attendees have appreciated hearing something authentic and vulnerable when they come. WIN is wrapping up its charter year, with membership starting at $1,000 annually (or $500 for recent grads).

“There is a lot of energy and hunger for women to be together and for us to celebrate women,” says Beck, who led focus groups and a steering committee to identify WIN’s vision and priorities.

VCU alum and parent Jennifer McDonald (M.P.H.’‘09) came to the brunch in 2025 because she was looking to build deeper connections. For years, she had focused on building her career and being a parent, but once she became an empty nester, she says, she wanted to “put myself out there and connect.”

The brunch proved the perfect place for her.

“I just fell in love. It was an amazing brunch, just to see so many people of diverse backgrounds who are working in so many areas, in health, in the arts,” McDonald says. “It honestly just energized me. I felt like I really had a place at the table.”

After the brunch experience, she says, she joined WIN immediately.

“It’s just a great way to meet people, network and talk to women who’ve gone through the stages of life that I have, the stages of personal life, professional life,” McDonald says. “I’d say I’m in the last 10-15 years of my career and I feel like I’m starting to bloom. I can’t stop learning, because that means my mind is going to go dormant. I want to live a very fulfilling and innovative life.”

Even though it’s in its charter year, Beck says, WIN is already raising significant funds to support WIN’s programming as well as many other areas of VCU.

“WIN is really special because it brings together people from across so many different areas of VCU in a way that hadn’t really existed before,” Beck says, noting that the network includes male members as well. “If you care about empowering women, uplifting women, and recognizing and celebrating their impact, there’s a place for you in WIN. WIN is truly for everyone.”

That empowerment is the impact McDonald wants to see from WIN.

“I want women at the table for many decisions being made. And I want young women to feel empowered that they can be at those tables,” she says. “I want everybody to know WIN as a household name, that we are there to provide any kind of subject matter expertise. Especially the young women, they need to know they’re empowered and they can make their own decisions and contribute … to any decision around the university.”

After attending the brunches and other WIN events feeling that she always walked away with good, timely advice for her life and career, Gibson decided this year to join WIN.

“I always step away from one of their events feeling empowered,” Gibson says. “I leave every conversation, every program feeling like I have so much more wealth of knowledge, and I always feel very positive and empowered.”

Gibson graduated from VCU with her undergraduate degree in 2019, and feels like her cohort of classmates didn’t tap into VCU’s alumni network because the COVID pandemic shut down events soon after they graduated. Now, she says, she urges her friends to reconnect as alums.

“I would encourage any individual that wants to still feel connected to the university to join WIN, because that’s exactly what it provides you with. It was quite transformative, not just personally but academically as well. With me coming from a small town of less than 7,000 people, coming to Richmond, to VCU, it was huge, almost like coming to New York. The people that I met there, whether it was from the dorms or the classes, all of it allowed me to grow as a person.

What have you been doing since graduating from VCU?

I graduated in 2004 with a B.S. in Accounting for my first degree. [Tisha has since earned her M.B.A. from the University of Phoenix.] I have stayed in the accounting and auditing field, and I am currently a senior accountant. I was in Richmond for maybe 12 years, and got my first job in accounts payable at Westminster Canterbury. There I became a junior accountant and moved my way up. I eventually went home to the Hampton Roads area, and worked there for a few years. My company, Northrop Grumman, asked me to move to Washington, D.C., to take on a lead assignment. I stayed up there for probably 10 years or so. Now I’m back in Hampton Roads, working for Newport News Shipyard.

Tell us about your involvement with the Hampton Roads alumni chapter and the Ladies and Sisters Tea.

That actually started while I was in college. It originally started out being work-study when I was at VCU. I was in the Office of General Accounting … they would have opportunities for us to go out and assist with different things. VCU is huge on volunteering at events for the community, so I helped out there and, when I moved to D.C., I did volunteering as well with We Are Family DC. When I moved back to Hampton Roads, I wished we had something for Hampton Roads alumni, and I looked it up and saw an event they had, a VCU cruise in Norfolk. I was super excited; I signed up, and it has just been phenomenal since then. Chapter members are more like family, that’s how much we talk to each other and are close to each other. They have been an enormous help with me transitioning back to Hampton Roads.

I started out attending events, and now I’m more in a leadership role. I recently led the VCU Hampton Roads Ladies and Sisters Tea Party, and that was phenomenal. Almost 100 women came out to support. I was the lead host and lead emcee for that event. That was my first time leading the tea. I absolutely love the group and what it means. And of course anything that deals with women empowerment also.

Why is it important to you to be involved with alumni events?

It allows me to continue building relationships. It allows me to continue to give back, not just to our alumni but also to the community. One of the events that we just had was hosting a watch party, connecting our fellow alumni with their families, making sure the VCU name stays out there.

Also it’s about impact. You’re able to help and support the young students. We hosted a kickoff party this past August for local students who were selected to attend VCU. We were able to just love on them and give them pointers. We had a panel that offered different points of view where the students and parents were allowed to come and ask questions.

How can other alumni get involved?

I would advise other alumni to get involved by looking at social media for events (Facebook or Instagram), reaching out and updating your contact information so you can get all the notifications of when we have events.

It’s a way to network, it’s a way to stay in contact with alumni, it’s a way for you to support the young alumni who may be on the same path you once were. It’s also fulfilling to bring alumni together and build a strong sense of community. Seeing people connect over a shared VCU experience and school spirit is always great. I worked as an appointed public official (at a city hall in N.J.) and came back to northern Virginia. Currently I work as a program manager/deputy director with a nonprofit.

Tell us about your involvement with the DMV alumni chapter.

I connected with the chapter in 2024. I’ve been going to events, and sometimes I join the planning meetings. I help somewhat with the planning, but I mostly do my volunteer work through the Recent Graduate Council. I’m the vice president for that council. We plan events, we do a lot of networking. I just work to get alumni connected and get students connected with opportunities to stay connected to the university.

Why is that connection important?

It helps you feel human. It helps you feel like you’re a part of something larger, and college wasn’t just a vague memory. It makes you feel like it’s something for life. You can give back to the university that gave you such a good education. It’s an opportunity to make new friends. It’s time to be open and continue to make new friends. That doesn’t just stop as you age.

You also volunteer with the Recent Graduate Council. Tell us about why you are interested in helping recent grads.

Right now, the nonprofit I work for, we work with seniors, but I have particularly always had an interest in working with young people, ages 16-24. It’s important to have a good solid ground and foundation for where you might want to take your life, and what direction you might want to go in.

Do you do other volunteer work?

This is the primary focus, but some other volunteer work I do is in my building. I live in a condo community, and we have a board of directors. They also do events and programs and sometimes I’ll help them with neighborhood watch and also with planning events and offering my expertise.

Tell us a little bit about your time at VCU.

VCU was a great time for me. I was actually a transfer student; I transferred in sophomore year. It was the best decision I have made. I felt really incorporated as a community. VCU recognized my needs and my wants for what I wanted out of a university.

I was part of a dance club, Muevelo; I worked on campus (as an office assistant, VCU Carver partnership and at the Cary Street Gym, helping with community outreach and memberships. I also was a resident assistant for two years. I really enjoyed my time at VCU. I took advantage of all the resources VCU had, like the gym, mental health services, just anything that was available to me as a student; it really shaped what I wanted out of life. Just doing psychology, it was a tough major, but I think I got a really good education out of it. It set me up well for grad school, and I graduated with honors in grad school because of it.

How should other alumni get involved?

Start off the fun way by connecting with your local alumni chapter (or other groups) and going to local events. Just have fun with it, just really enjoy the time that you have. I know college was a while ago, but it doesn’t end, the fun doesn’t stop.
