Alumni-owned business spotlight: Heidi Wilson (M.S.’08)
VCU Alumni is highlighting Ram entrepreneurs listed in our alumni-owned business directory. Learn tips from Heidi Wilson (M.S.’08), owner of HWILSONPR public relations and brand consulting practice.

What tools helped you the most when you started out?
When HWILSONPR was created in 2008, websites such as Craigslist allowed me to advertise my services at minimal cost. Also, leveraging my already established networks such as family, friends, former co-workers, sorority sisters and college classmates was fundamental in helping me get started. My very first client was a friend who allowed me to create a press kit for his nonprofit organization. Lastly, the Public Relations Society of America, a professional association for public relations practitioners, allowed me to stay current with the latest developments and best practices in the field.
What was the biggest challenge to maintaining your business?
The biggest challenge was time management. As a part-time entrepreneur, finding the balance of dedicating equal time to all projects was a challenge when getting started. Now, I understand my busy seasons and my slow seasons, therefore I’m able to plan accordingly.
What advice do you have for people considering starting a business?
My advice is to learn the components of business literacy and how business works. Taking a class, reading a book or investing in coaching about business can help lessen many hiccups down the road.
