Interim Dean David Sarrett and D3 student Crystal Hayes

More than 200 friends of the School of Dentistry – including alumni, donors, students, faculty members and VCU leadership – gathered at the newly renovated Virginia Museum of Fine Arts for the annual Friends of Dental Education Dinner.

Guests were treated to musical performances from some of the school’s very talented dental students, and docents were on hand to impart some of the history of the museum’s unique collections.

Interim Dean David Sarrett greeted everyone and shared how gifts from alumni and other friends of the school are put to work – in high-tech equipment to enable patients to receive the highest standard of care, in lectureships to allow for the continued growth and professional development of the school’s faculty and in scholarships to ease the anxiety of dental students who often graduate with significant debt. One scholarship recipient, Crystal Hayes (D3), told her story and explained how scholarships are not simply gifts of money, but gifts of hope, inspiration and encouragement.

The evening concluded with remarks from VCU President Michael Rao who encouraged everyone to continue supporting the School of Dentistry, even in tough economic times, to ensure that students receive the highest quality education possible and that patients receive attentive, compassionate care.
