This is the third fellowship he has received from AFPE, having won the 2021 Pre-Doctoral Fellowship in Health Outcome Disparities last year and another AFPE fellowship before joining VCU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m thankful to AFPE, especially Ellen Woods, the President of AFPE, for their continued support of my research during my time at the VCU School of Pharmacy,\u201d Wagner said. \u201cI\u2019m excited that they see value in the research that I have been conducting with Dr. Salgado and I look forward to sharing the deliverables of our work in the coming year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AFPE\u2019s Pre-Doctoral Fellowship in Pharmaceutical Sciences is designed to positively impact patient and public health by supporting high performing students who possess the skill and aptitude to become outstanding scientists and leaders in the pharmaceutical industry, academia and the government\/nonprofit sectors. He has been a core faculty member since CPPI began in 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen asked what I do and why I like my job, I often have difficulty providing a short answer,\u201d Sisson said. \u201cI am in a unique position where I can align my passion to help people as an educator and a clinician. Together, my colleagues and I are training an interprofessional workforce to increase access to much-needed medical care in Virginia and around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sisson is taking on the assistant director position since\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/app.pharmacy.vcu.edu\/tmsalgado\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Teresa Salgado<\/a>, CPPI\u2019s previous assistant director, moved into the director position in January 2022. Salgado follows <a href=\"https:\/\/app.pharmacy.vcu.edu\/dldixon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dave Dixon<\/a>, who will remain involved with CPPI as a core faculty member.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When CPPI began, Sisson\u2019s main role with the center involved serving as the liaison between CPPI and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.centerforhealthyhearts.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Center for Healthy Hearts<\/a>, a local free clinic and one of CPPI\u2019s first practice partners. In addition to caring for patients in the interprofessional clinic, Sisson also serves as the pharmacy residency director for two <a href=\"https:\/\/ambcare.pharmacy.vcu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PGY2 Ambulatory Care<\/a> residents at CHH and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crossoverministry.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CrossOver Healthcare Ministry<\/a>, another local free clinic and CPPI practice partner. Sisson also began a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/diabetes\/prevention\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Diabetes Prevention Program<\/a> at VCU, which gives Pharm.D. students hands-on experience interacting with patients and is funded by CPPI\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/cppi.pharmacy.vcu.edu\/research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">InnoVAte grant<\/a> from the CDC and the Virginia Department of Health.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He works in all these areas and others in addition to teaching courses as a professor at <a href=\"https:\/\/pharmacy.vcu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">VCU School of Pharmacy<\/a>. This work is meaningful to him, he said, as it all aligns with his personal mission: \u201cto serve the underserved and teach others how to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIncluding pharmacists on the diabetes care team is important because the disease affects so many people and causes so many health concerns,\u201d Sisson said. \u201cI like teaching people how to be well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his new undertaking as CPPI assistant director, Sisson brings this experience and perspective to other areas of focus within the center. He and Salgado are hopeful their shared and differing experiences will propel the center forward toward achieving its goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDr. Sisson brings to this role his unique relationship with the community and his connections across the university and Virginia,\u201d Salgado said. \u201cHe is a connector who makes things happen, and I could not be more thrilled to have him help move the center\u2019s mission forward. I look forward to this new phase of the center.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sisson, Salgado and others in the center are working on projects that demonstrate the value of integrating pharmacists into patient care more extensively. As pharmacists are largely considered the most accessible health care professionals, incorporating their expertise as part of care teams more often can make health care more holistic and help improve patient care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur vision for advancing pharmacy practice is not a pharmacist working alone in a silo somewhere,\u201d Sisson said. \u201cIt\u2019s truly as an integrated part of the medical team. You get better outcomes more consistently when you have a team than you do with any individual working by themselves, so that\u2019s what I\u2019m trying to advocate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to these CPPI-related roles, Sisson is a certified diabetes educator and past member of the Board of Directors for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adcesconnect.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Association of Diabetes Educators<\/a>. Recent publications include a book chapter on Pharmacotherapy for Glucose Management in the fifth edition of ADCES\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.diabeteseducator.org\/education\/books\/adces-art-science-reference\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Art and Science of Diabetes Self-management Education<\/a>. She also emphasized the range of professionals who support the group through mentorship or serving on its board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Behdani then went into detail about some of the research PDH members have been conducting over the last year. These research projects led the two founders to create <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/kbhealthtech\/about\/\">KBHealthTech LLC<\/a>, through which they offer health technology solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two then turned the mic over to Salgado, who explained briefly to the students present the mission and goals of CPPI and the ways in which PDH students support those goals through the implementation of tools such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.knime.com\/\">KNIME<\/a> in CPPI research projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s amazing to me how the motivation of one faculty member and the willingness of a group of students to learn new skills can change the ways I conduct my research,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1100\" height=\"632\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.vcu.edu\/cppi-pharmacy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/607\/2022\/02\/IMG-6638-edited.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-109\" \/><figcaption>Teresa Salgado, M.Pharm., Ph.D., presenting on CPPI projects in digital health for the Pharmacists for Digital Health Showcase<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Mishra closed out the showcase with a presentation on ways VCU Health is incorporating digital health into many of the research and patient-facing initiatives it undertakes. He shared some of the digitally enabled care models they use as examples of how much health technology use has increased in the last several years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, nearly 70% of our appointments were conducted via telehealth,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s now evened out to about 20%, but that\u2019s still a significant amount, and telehealth is here to stay.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Much credit was given to PDH faculty adviser and CPPI core faculty member <a href=\"https:\/\/app.pharmacy.vcu.edu\/wijesingheds\">Dayanjan Wijesinghe<\/a>, who originally saw the need for pharmacy students to learn more digital health-focused skills and encouraged Behdani and Ko to create PDH.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe really wouldn\u2019t be here without the support of Dr. Day,\u201d Ko said during her presentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The showcase finished out a week of celebrating PDH\u2019s first year, which kicked off at their February general body meeting with the announcement of a digital health data challenge. All VCU School of Pharmacy students were invited to participate in the data challenge using the platform of their choice \u2013 Microsoft Excel, KNIME, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3schools.com\/sql\/\">SQL<\/a>, to name a few. Winners were announced at the showcase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cppi.pharmacy.vcu.edu\/our-team\/graduate-students\/\">Tyler Wagner<\/a>, CPPI Ph.D. student, won the first-place prize of a Fitbit and $75 for his data visualization of the costs of COVID-19 vaccination in Virginia using KNIME. Second-year Pharm.D. student <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/trey-halsey-554a9220a\">Trey Halsey<\/a> won the second-place prize of $75 for his visualization of the cost of COVID-19 vaccinations using Microsoft Excel. With a plan to graduate in May 2026, Okpeku is the first Ph.D. student to study under CPPI core faculty member <a href=\"https:\/\/app.pharmacy.vcu.edu\/japatterson2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Julie Patterson<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m very excited to have Aima join us here at VCU and CPPI,\u201d Patterson said. \u201cShe brings a breadth of clinical pharmacy and research experience in health outcomes research and pharmacoepidemiology as well as a unique perspective from her time as a pharmacist in Nigeria. She&#8217;s an excellent addition to our team and graduate program!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to earning her master\u2019s, Okpeku worked as a pharmacist in the Nigerian equivalent of the White House Medical Unit, serving the president, presidential staff, and international dignitaries, and at <a href=\"http:\/\/ihvnigeria.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nigeria&#8217;s Institute of Human Virology<\/a>, where her role included overseeing the implementation of a community pharmacy-based differentiated care model for people living with HIV.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPart of my experience involved the capacity building of health care workers in Nigeria,\u201d she said. \u201cI also worked to provide quality health services for people living with HIV and updated and evidence-based recommendations for HIV prevention, treatment, care, and support services for all ages.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Okpeku decided to continue her education to expand her body of research into the neurocognition of patients with both HIV and opioid addiction. This area of research matters to her because people from her home country of Nigeria are disproportionately affected by these medical conditions, and there\u2019s a lack of research in this sphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEarning my Ph.D. gives me more of an edge, and it gives me more time to understand this content,\u201d she said. \u201cNot a lot of research is being done into this area with this population.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the course of her Ph.D. program, Okpeku aims to publish at least three papers in the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Journal of the American Medical Association<\/a>, the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/jaids\/pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes<\/a>, or other medical care journals, and she hopes to present her research at <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispor.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Professional Society for Health Economics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/ispe.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering (ISPE)<\/a> conferences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In her free time, she enjoys watching biographical documentaries and cartoons, especially The Powerpuff Girls, and she\u2019s currently on the lookout for a good place for salsa dancing in Richmond.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Aimalohi (Aima) Okpeku joined fellow Center for Pharmacy Practice Innovation graduate students studying pharmacoeconomics and health outcomes in the fall after earning her master\u2019s in pharmaceutical outcomes and policy at the University of Florida. Salgado<\/a>, Ph.D., previously the co-director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/cppi.pharmacy.vcu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Center for Pharmacy Practice Innovation<\/a>, is kicking off 2022 as the new director of CPPI.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is an honor for me to lead this terrific group of colleagues and friends,\u201d she said. \u201cI am really excited about this opportunity!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Salgado took on a larger leadership role within the center alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/app.pharmacy.vcu.edu\/dldixon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dave Dixon<\/a>, Pharm.D., as they served as co-directors of the center for the last several months after Dixon took on the role of interim chair of the <a href=\"https:\/\/pharmacy.vcu.edu\/dpos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Department of Pharmacotherapy and Outcomes Science<\/a> at the School of Pharmacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I have big shoes to fill,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m thankful to Dr. Dixon for his leadership of CPPI and for the opportunity to have served as his assistant director for almost five years.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Salgado has been the assistant director of CPPI since joining the <a href=\"https:\/\/pharmacy.vcu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">VCU School of Pharmacy<\/a> in late 2016. As director she plans to continue leading the center in its mission of helping pharmacists optimize patient outcomes through research, practice, professional development and policy initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;With the new legislation on statewide protocols and the opportunities this creates for pharmacists, I look forward to working with state organizations to prepare the Virginia pharmacist workforce for these expanded roles and to evaluate the impact of these initiatives,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dixon will continue to serve as a core faculty member of CPPI as he takes on his new role as chair for the Department of Pharmacotherapy and Outcomes Science and Nancy and Dave McFarlane professor. He is confident that Salgado will take the center to new heights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCPPI would not have achieved all that it has over the past five years without her, and it is incredibly reassuring to me that Teresa will be taking over as director,\u201d he said. \u201cHer passion and enthusiasm for advancing the role of pharmacists in community and ambulatory settings is contagious.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Established in 2015, the center works to develop and evaluate innovative care models that further integrate pharmacists into interprofessional, patient-centered care models. With 11 core faculty members, seven affiliate faculty members and four graduate students, the center is poised for growth with Salgado at the helm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe hope to show value in having a pharmacist on the medical team, in terms of clinical and economic outcomes,\u201d Salgado said. \u201cWe already have pharmacists doing outstanding work in several medical groups and clinics. And we hope to push some legislation in that direction.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to coming to VCU, Salgado completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at the <a href=\"https:\/\/pharmacy.umich.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University of Michigan College of Pharmacy<\/a>. She holds Ph.D. and M.Pharm. degrees from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulisboa.pt\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University of Lisbon<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Teresa M. These conditions are disproportionately prevalent in the disadvantaged communities that rely on VCU for care.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to the nature of treatment, diabetes and hypertension patients often navigate through multiple points of the health care system like pharmacy, endocrinology and general practice. Coordinating the cross-disciplinary care required can be challenging, which is why we at the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/cppi.pharmacy.vcu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Center for Pharmacy Practice Innovation<\/a> launched the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vcuhealth.org\/services\/telehealth\/for-providers\/education\/diabetes-and-hypertension-project-echo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Diabetes and Hypertension ECHO<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Diabetes and Hypertension ECHO is one of seven ECHO programs at VCU Health, which are all based on the ECHO, or Extension of Community Healthcare Outcomes, model of building learning networks that connect subject matter experts to practicing providers, clinicians and social health care professionals. VCU Health first began using the model with its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vcuhealth.org\/services\/telehealth\/for-providers\/education\/virginia-opioid-addiction-echo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Virginia Opioid Addiction ECHO<\/a> in 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Diabetes and Hypertension ECHO focuses on creating a community of practitioners and educators at VCU Health and across Virginia whose goal is to ensure all patients with diabetes and hypertension receive the best care.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe ability to review complex cases and hear perspective from the multiple disciplines represented in our participant groups, such as physicians, advanced practice providers, pharmacists, social workers, and more,\u00a0 allows for a truly inclusive and collaborative approach to challenging cases in a welcoming virtual environment. Given the significant shortages of specialist providers, particularly in rural areas, and the barriers that many patients may face regarding transportation, Project ECHO is a way to better disseminate clinical expertise more widely and reach a larger patient population through telecommunication,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/medschool.vcu.edu\/expertise\/detail.html?ID=2938\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Trang Le<\/a>, the program\u2019s diabetes subject matter expert and assistant professor, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This program is open to all practitioners, including doctors, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, physician assistants, nurses and community-based clinicians, and other care providers. The biweekly, hour-long sessions are made up of short didactic lectures and case presentations where real, deidentified patient cases are discussed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participation is free and you can earn continuing education credits for taking part.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each session targets a different area of diabetes or hypertension care, so there is always a new reason to join the program. Health care workers now and in the future require more digital skills than ever before, so it\u2019s important that pharmacy schools equip their students for this shift.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No one understands this better than the students who have been navigating schooling and interviewing and conducting research in the midst of this pandemic, which has only accelerated the move toward digital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/rxdigitalhealth\/\">Pharmacists for Digital Health<\/a> started as we felt the need for a platform for students to explore nontraditional pathways in digital health and learn skills that are not included in the curriculum of health professional schools but are needed for the future leaders of our health system,\u201d said Amir M. Behdani, a second-year Pharm.D. student and co-founder of the student group. \u201cWe can use those skills to solve real-world problems that exist in our health system in order to fulfill our ultimate goal of improving patient outcomes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He and PDH co-founder Emily Ko, also a second-year Pharm.D. student, saw the opportunity for digital tools \u2014 some less prevalent, like artificial intelligence or virtual reality, and some more commonly used, like text messaging \u2014 to be used in community pharmacies to keep patients connected to their practitioners and on top of their health care plans between appointments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Access to health care equals access to data,\u201d said Ko.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the ways they\u2019re accomplishing this is through an initiative with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.centerforhealthyhearts.org\/\">Center for Healthy Hearts<\/a>. They created a system that allows patients to share health data including blood pressure, blood glucose and other relevant parameters with CHH providers through encrypted text messages, expediting treatment processes and increasing continuity of care between clinic visits. Read more about this initiative, called myDigitalARC, and their second-place finish in the national<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pqaalliance.org\/index.php?option=com_dailyplanetblog&amp;view=entry&amp;year=2020&amp;month=08&amp;day=10&amp;id=18:2020-21-hqic\"> 2020-21 PQA Healthcare Quality Innovation Challenge<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.vcu.edu\/pharmacy\/2021\/05\/student-group-aims-to-bridge-the-digital-divide-in-health-care\/\">an article<\/a> published by VCU School of Pharmacy earlier this summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In another project they\u2019re working on, called the Pharmacy Diversion Monitoring Program, they\u2019re designing a comprehensive, proactive diversion monitoring system at <a href=\"https:\/\/shelteringarmsinstitute.com\/\">Sheltering Arms Institute<\/a>. This system accurately and efficiently assesses every chain of custody gap in controlled substance management and has already significantly improved the workflow at this institution in just the few months it\u2019s been in place. Sheltering Arms is actually the first client for their startup, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/kbhealthtech\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">KBHealthTech, LLC<\/a>, through which companies can hire them to solve problems in health care using data science applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re pharmacists first,\u201d said Behdani of the areas they\u2019re focusing on. All of the digital skills they\u2019re learning could be used in their pharmacy careers in some way, and more than that, these skills are broadening the scope of what pharmacists can contribute to patient care and improving health outcomes. \u201cI believe digital health will take over some of the traditional pathways in our health system, and it is essential for pharmacists to develop these skills to expand their scope of practice, whether they are pursuing traditional or nontraditional pharmacy careers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Innovations such as these are where PDH and CPPI are aligned. As the two groups have similar missions, PDH will be the first student group to be affiliated with CPPI. More than that, PDH is the first pharmacy student group of its kind in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery time I hear them talk about what they\u2019re doing, I get very excited about where they\u2019re headed and what we can accomplish together,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/cppi.pharmacy.vcu.edu\/our-team\/\">Teresa Salgado<\/a>, CPPI assistant director.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CPPI faculty member <a href=\"https:\/\/app.pharmacy.vcu.edu\/wijesingheds\">Dayanjan \u201cShanaka\u201d Wijesinghe<\/a> is the faculty adviser for PDH, and CPPI plans to further support the new student group through mentorship, collaboration on community pharmacy projects and the new CPPI Digital Health Lab in the <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.vcu.edu\/mcv\/blackwellsmithbldg\/\">Smith Building<\/a>. Formerly a student computer lab, Smith Room 350 is in the early stages of being converted to a working space where students and faculty can brainstorm and contribute to these and other innovative projects. It will also house the VCU School of Pharmacy 3D printers and virtual reality headsets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The students of PDH plan to train their members in data analytic software such as SQL and Python programming languages in an effort to supplement pharmacy curriculum. They\u2019ve already hosted two workshops this year focusing on digital productivity tools, digital task management tools and navigating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.knime.com\/learning\">KNIME software<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of PDH\u2019s partnership with KNIME Analytics, PDH members can earn KNIME certification free of charge. Through this partnership, PDH is developing a data science track with a focus on digital health and health care applications. This track will help future clinicians tap into the power of data science themselves, relying less on the expertise of data scientists or tech services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These and other digital health competencies will be included in the Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience module PDH is developing with funding from a <a href=\"https:\/\/real.vcu.edu\/grants\/awardees21\/\">VCU REAL grant<\/a> they won in the spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe VCU REAL grant gives us the ability to set up an APPE rotation to put the skillsets we gain during our years in class to use, developing real digital health applications and solutions before even graduating,\u201d said Ko.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the student group began just this year, its students are already making great strides in increasing efficiency in community clinics and identifying and meeting the knowledge needs of pharmacy students to increase their competitiveness in this digital age. And these tools are just the beginning: Ko and Behdani are scheduled to share some of their work at the upcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/connect.aacp.org\/home\">AACP Digital Health Institute<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs students, we are learning how data play into patient care and how data work at the core despite technology\u2019s always-evolving face,\u201d Ko said. \u201cWe are so excited for PDH to become a platform for our peers to gain transferable skillsets and develop their own health care solutions \u2014 and maybe even health tech startups. I&#8217;m thankful that others believe in the research that I\u2019m conducting and look forward to making a difference in the way we as a nation address the upcoming primary care physician shortage.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AFPE\u2019s Pre-Doctoral Fellowship in Health Outcome Disparities fellowship recognizes a pre-doctoral student whose research focuses on either a disease area which disproportionately impacts underserved populations or whose research focuses on reducing health care disparities and improving health outcomes for underserved populations in the United States. AFPE awards 15 pre-doctoral fellowships each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSomething unique about my research is that I also aim to identify disparities that exist in patient health and associated clinical outcomes within primary care services,\u201d Wagner said. \u201cData from the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ahrq.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality<\/a> has shown racial and ethnic disparities vary significantly by group, especially for poorer and uninsured populations. Academia is an environment with delayed gratification, so seeing your research questions deemed important by another organization, and especially the PhRMA Foundation, serves as confirmation of the relevance of your work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal of his project \u2014 \u201cTrajectories of medication non-adherence with time-varying predictors and association with clinical and economic outcomes: a comparison of classical statistical methods with machine learning algorithms\u201d \u2014 is to enhance the current methods used to describe longitudinal trends in medication adherence and discuss whether current value-based payment models that reward improvements in medication adherence actually reflect improvements in patient outcomes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe fluid nature of medication adherence makes it hard to identify which patient- and context-specific characteristics are predictors of changes in medication adherence and what is the optimal medication adherence behavior,\u201d Pontinha said. \u201cThis project will help identify the developmental perspective of how patients establish their medication adherence behavior patterns while identifying the life-changing events or time-varying predictors of medication adherence to help health care professionals design targeted interventions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The PhRMA Foundation\u2019s Predoctoral Fellowship in Health Outcomes Research award provides $25,000 per year in stipend support to promising students (U.S. and non-U.S. citizens) during advanced stages of training and thesis research and for the career development of scientists prepared to engage in health outcomes research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The PhRMA Foundation works to improve public health by proactively investing in innovative research, education and value-driven health care. That\u2019s exactly what Shantelle Brown is bringing to the Church Hill area in Virginia. But hope is more than just a word to her \u2014 it\u2019s a place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brown opened <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hopepharmacyrva.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">HOPE Pharmacy<\/a> in early 2019 as part of a health initiative in the Church Hill area to provide localized care for widespread issues like hypertension and diabetes by increasing access to healthy foods and lifestyle choices. The pharmacy opened alongside places such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarketat25th.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Market at 25th Street<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vcuhealth.org\/news\/vcu-health-hub-serving-a-community-in-need\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">VCU Health Hub<\/a> with the goal of not just increasing access but also increasing education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re here to provide access to the whole community, and not just access but education, too,\u201d she said of the pharmacy\u2019s purpose. \u201cPeople can go into places and provide opportunities and call it \u2018access,\u2019 but we want to help everyone here understand why they need the types of care we\u2019re offering.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brown actually began her career in community pharmacy just a few blocks from where HOPE Pharmacy stands today, in a time before there was as much diversity in the area as there is now. She worked in a few chain pharmacies, which helped her build a solid foundation as a pharmacist serving an underserved community. In 2018, the store she was working in had to close as part of a nationwide store closure. Instead of being discouraged, she leveraged it as an opportunity to serve the community she knew and loved in a new way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHOPE Pharmacy was born out of the idea of giving hope to everyone, and that\u2019s what we really try to do every day \u2014 \u2018Helping Others Physically Prosper Every day.\u2019 If you look at our logo, you can see that acronym,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m trying to bridge the gap between what I see as the old and the new Church Hill.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.vcu.edu\/cppi-pharmacy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/607\/2021\/02\/DLR_1168.jpg\" alt=\"Shantelle Brown helping a patient at HOPE Pharmacy.\" class=\"wp-image-69\" width=\"575\" height=\"383\" \/><figcaption>Shantelle Brown helping a patient at HOPE Pharmacy.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Before HOPE pharmacy even opened, Brown was talking with <a href=\"https:\/\/cppi.pharmacy.vcu.edu\/our-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CPPI director Dave Dixon<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/cppi.pharmacy.vcu.edu\/our-team\/core-faculty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CPPI core faculty member Evan Sisson<\/a> about how they can provide and study pharmacy services that would ultimately improve outcomes for patients not just at HOPE Pharmacy but other pharmacies across Virginia as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m excited,\u201d she said about partnering with CPPI. \u201cThe sky\u2019s the limit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the coming months, Brown is hoping to offer ambulatory blood pressure monitoring as part of an ongoing study CPPI members are conducting on masked hypertension and the roles of pharmacists in treating it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m thankful to be a part of it,\u201d she said. \u201cThis collaboration is going to be great for the community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of the day, that\u2019s what it\u2019s all about for her: Serving everyone in the community.
