Dr. Cobb is an Associate Professor of Psychology and director of the Health Psychology Doctoral Program<\/a> at Virginia Commonwealth University. She also currently co-directs the Virginia Youth Tobacco Projects Research Coalition.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Cobb\u2019s research interests include assessing patterns of tobacco use initiation, maintenance, and cessation and the refining of clinical trial and in-laboratory methods for tobacco product evaluation. Her areas of focus include menthol cigarette smoking and the use of other flavored tobacco products such as hookah, little cigars\/cigarillos, and electronic nicotine delivery systems and their effects on individual and population health. Dr. Cobb prioritizes engagement with state and community partners in her work, and some of her frequent collaborators include Henrico Too Smart 2 Start Coalition for youth substance use prevention, Henrico County Public Schools, the Virginia Department of Health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She receives state and federal funding to support tobacco-focused research and works with a diverse, multi-disciplinary team of scientists and trainees. She is committed to addressing tobacco-related health inequities and supporting the next generation of health psychologists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her spare time, she is an avid Crossfitter and patron of bakeries in her Church Hill neighborhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Established in 2014, the Behavioral Health Research Lab (BHRL) focuses on projects related to how tobacco and other substance use is associated with biological and behavioral measures such as nicotine and other toxicant exposures, subjective effects, abuse liability, and overall consumption patterns, as well as examining broader population-level use patterns and associated predictors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A primary focus has been investigating the influence of non-cigarette tobacco products such as waterpipes\/hookah, little cigars\/cigarillos, and electronic nicotine delivery systems on individual and population health. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To address these research questions, the BHRL uses multiple methods including those from the clinical laboratory, content analysis, survey-based approaches, behavioral economic models, and ecological momentary assessment. The BHRL partners with researchers in Departments of Psychology, Forensic Science, Kinesiology and Health Sciences, Internal Medicine, Health Policy, as well as VCU’s Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overall, research performed in the BHRL is used to inform public health efforts and tobacco-related policies surrounding the use and availability of tobacco products. We aim to disseminate our findings broadly including at the local and community level, among policy-makers, and within the scientific community at large.
