What\u2019s New With Top Hat: Elevating Engagement and Efficiency with AI<\/strong>
In today\u2019s diverse educational landscape, the challenge for educators isn\u2019t just delivering content\u2014it\u2019s sparking genuine engagement, saving valuable time, and supporting every student. Join us to explore how Top Hat is meeting these challenges head-on with Ace, our AI-powered teaching and learning assistant. Discover how to leverage Ace intentionally to personalize learning, generate interactive content in seconds, and streamline your workflow both inside and outside the classroom. You\u2019ll also learn about the dedicated support available to you both locally on campus and directly from Top Hat to help you confidently integrate these new tools.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond the VCU-specific session focusing on Top Hat’s ACE AI tool, virtual office hours and walkthroughs are available from August 11 to September 11, 2026.

To help faculty get the most out of Top Hat, there are two session types:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. 20-Minute Feature Walkthroughs: <\/strong>Targeted deep dives into specific areas of the platform. The topics were selected based on the questions and support cases Top Hat receives most frequently during this time of year.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    1. 90-Minute Drop-In Office Hours: <\/strong>Open sessions for existing users where faculty can get 1:1 help. Participants will be admitted on an ongoing basis throughout the session, and are encouraged to come prepared with specific questions.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Please note, these sessions are not introductory, rather, they are designed to proactively provide faculty with options for 1:1 support during the start of the semester rush. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      On July\u00a014, 2026 the Media Support Services Classroom Support team will begin updating\u00a0our standard projection format for the Podium PC<\/strong> from\u00a016:10\u00a0to 16:9 in the central classrooms across\u00a0VCU. We will be completing these updates in time for the Fall 2026 semester. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Why the change?<\/strong>
      When originally adopted, the 16:10 format provided a little extra vertical space on classroom screens, which worked well with projector-based setups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Today, however, 16:9 has become the standard format for monitors, large displays, and most presentation tools. As a result, it is increasingly difficult to find compatible equipment that supports 16:10 without additional cost or special configuration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      How will this impact users?<\/strong>
      No action is required for most users.<\/strong> For most people, this change will be seamless. 16:9 is still a widescreen format, and most presentation tools already default to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      If you create content specifically formatted for 16:10, you may notice some differences in how it appears (for example, slightly more empty space at the top or bottom). Otherwise, no changes are needed to your existing materials or workflow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      This update helps ensure a more consistent experience across classrooms and improves compatibility with modern display technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Laptop users will be unaffected<\/strong> as the HDMI and Wireless Presentation inputs have been set to 16:9 for some time due to hardware requirements. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      This summer the VCU Instructional Computing Services team will be transitioning ALL centrally-managed classroom computers to a new endpoint management platform called Microsoft Intune. While this change involves the team reinstalling the Windows 11 operating system on every computer, it also means some changes to the way you will need to sign-in. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      For more information about VCU’s centrally-managed classrooms and the computers provided for instructors and students to use, please visit the VCU Classroom Technology website at https:\/\/classroomtech.vcu.edu\/resources\/classroom-computers\/<\/a>. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      As demonstrated in the animation below, once a computer has transitioned to Microsoft Intune (notice the “map” background screen), you will need to sign-in using your FULL VCU email address, ex. yourusername@vcu.edu. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Remember to Sign-Out<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      As a friendly reminder, we ask that ALL users of any VCU managed computer remember to sign-out <\/strong>(“logoff”, “logout”, and “sign-off”) from their computer profile before leaving the room. By signing-out of your profile you help to ensure the next person who needs to use the computer won’t need to resort to rebooting, power-cycling, or have to call for assistance. It’s a simple thing to do too! Just click the yellow “Sign-Out” button in the bottom-right corner. See screenshot below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
